C. AaricutuRAL EXPERIMENT<lb />STATION.<lb />RaLucu, N.C., Feb. 9th, 1897.<lb /><lb />Q. L. Joyner, Greenville, N. C.<lb /><lb />Dear Sin:"There is a growing<lb />practice in North Corolina and in other<lb />states, notably Kentucky, whereby<lb />Paris green is used to spray Or dust<lb />growing tobacco to destroy horn worm,<lb />bud worm and flea beetle. This Paris<lb />green, as you know, contains arseni¢<lb />which is poisonous in sufficient doses.<lb />The strength of the solution for spray~<lb />ing is about four ounces of Paris green<lb />to a barrel, or 50 gallons of water, and<lb />the application of spray is about three<lb />times during the season. The question<lb />naturally arises whether this use of<lb />Paris green will be detrimental to the<lb />future sale and use of the tobacco.<lb /><lb />Sg re a<lb /><lb />The quanity of arsenic which has<lb />veri ascertained to exist on the tobacco<lb />Jeat, as determined by the Kentucky<lb />Experiment Station, varies from a trace<lb />up to 0.287 grains of white arsenic per<lb />pound of dry tobacco leaf, with the moat<lb />favorable conditions for the retenuon of<lb />Paris green upon the leaf. ~The mini-<lb />mum fatal dose is about 2 to 24 eruins<lb />of arsenic taken at one time. Applied<lb />to the quanity.of tobucco mentioned, it<lb />would take about seyen pounts of<lb />tobacco. leaf - swallowed «t one time in<lb />order to produce a possible tatal dose.<lb />To swallow this quanity 1s out of the<lb />question and it seems impvssible for an<lb />objectionable dose to be taken into the<lb />system, a8 tobacco chewers are not in<lb />the habit of swallowing the small<lb />amount of tobacco they use. 7<lb />Whether the continued use of this<lb />tabaseo with che largest amount of<lb />arsenic noted above would resul: in any<lb />objectionable effect isa different ques"<lb />tion, If is not reasonable, however, to<lb />suppose, under the cundifione, that this<lb />could be possible. Arsenic itself is<lb />given asa medicinal dose in soma sec"<lb />tions, especially tor malarial diseases<lb />and usea_as a tonic. It is possible,<lb />~therefore, that the small (it any at all)<lb />that might be detained uncer the most<lb />favorable circumstances instead of prov-<lb />ing objectionable might prove advanta"<lb />geous to the healtL of the. chewer. In<lb />Kentucky, where the practice of spray-<lb />ing tobacco in this way is followed,<lb />many grow.rs do not hesitate to chew<lb />their own tobacco sprayed in this way<lb />and no harmful results have ever been<lb />noted.<lb />Spraying as above to\destroy the<lb />~worms named is a very effective remedy<lb />and would result in their destruction<lb />obefore the leaf is ragged, and a conse~<lb />quent matketing of a better grade and<lb />more even leaf, The main qnestion,<lb /><lb />~ Rowever, ~is: Whether the consumers of<lb />sobo:c0, whether by chewing or smok-<lb />| ng, would be apt to be deterred from<lb />| ising this tobaocd, even though there is<lb />he no harm whatever that might come<lb />~from ~ite ~ Oftentimes scares, although<lb /><lb />_ they»may be senseless, have quite ma<lb />terially affected the sale of crude pro-<lb />@ucts. This has been notably the case<lb />Gn the early history of fruix growing,<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />Write plainly<lb /><lb />heen used to destroy insects or fungovs<lb />diseases upon grape vines and fruit<lb /><lb />grees. This scare, however, has died<lb /><lb />Ont, and is never heard of at present.<lb />Paris green is now universally used as.<lb />a epray for fruits<lb /><lb />[write you ut length and will ask<lb /><lb />you to kindly write me your opinion<lb /><lb />=|npon the subject as to~whether the<lb /><lb />process of tobacco: treated in this way<lb />would be affected in the market. Kindly<lb />consider the question not only froma<lb />warehousemanTs standpoint, but ~trom<lb />the users and the dealers standpoint.<lb />The matter isa very important one<lb />and I will think you to write me as<lb />soon as possible.<lb />Very respectfully,<lb />H. B. Barrie, Director,<lb /><lb />_ The above communication from Dr.<lb />Battle, Director of the N. C. Experi-<lb />Station will be read with great interest<lb />by all tobacco farmers,<lb /><lb />If any practically harmless means<lb />can be used by which the flea beetle<lb />can be sucsesstully destroyed, leaving<lb />the bud and horn worm out of the<lb />question, we canTt see why any sensible<lb />person should make any objection to it,<lb />though there always skeptics and wise<lb />men (more of the latter class) who<lb />grasp such opportunities as the above to<lb />bring themselves into prominence, not<lb />being able to do itin any o tlery.<lb />As a matter of course if~ there is uny<lb />lawful reason why Paris green should<lb />not be used on tobacco then it ought to<lb />be known, but practically speaking it<lb />has been clearly demonstrated that<lb />there can be no harmful results from<lb />its use andif by its use thes: most<lb />dangerous pests cau be destroyed then<lb />the farmers certainly ought to be in<lb />possession of all the information on the<lb />subject, for the flea beetle alove cost<lb />the farmers annually thousands of dol-<lb />lars, in that there is no means by which<lb />they can be destroyed and they really<lb />do tobacco more harm than the other<lb />two combined, for they gather upon the<lb />leaves and suck the substance, leaving<lb />nothing but a chaffy, fibrcus substance<lb />that is neither wanted by the buyer nor<lb />weighs anything for the farmers.<lb /><lb />ltemove these three pests of the to-<lb />bacco plant and the eye sore of tobacco<lb />It will be<lb />more trouble to cultivate a croup of to-<lb />bacco with these out of the way than<lb />it will acrop of cotton and ifthey can<lb />be gotten rid of the value of the tobac-<lb /><lb />growing 18. gone. ho<lb /><lb />co plant will be far greater than it is at<lb /><lb />present. 0.
