Feb. 6th, 1897.<lb /><lb />Nobody seems to have any idea that<lb />the amended abitration treaty with<lb />England, which has been favorably re-<lb />ported to the Senate, will be acted upon<lb />at this session. In fuct, its friends would<lb />be efraid to torce a vote at. this: time<lb />lest it should result in rejection of the<lb />treaty.<lb /><lb />One of the legacies of the Harrison<lb />administration is a treaty that binds the<lb />United States to pay $6, 000 a year<lb />towards the support of a monarchy and<lb />an almighty poor specimen of monarchy<lb />at that. The treaty in question was<lb />made with Germany and England and<lb />the mcney goes to pay the expenses of<lb />the remi-savage King of Samoa, A<lb />year or so ago President Cleveland<lb />recommended legislation looking toward<lb />the cbrogation of this treaty, and each<lb />year there has been a protest made<lb />when the House reached the item of<lb />the Diplomatic and Cousular appropri-<lb />ation bill carrying that $6,000. Bradley T. Johnson, who was<lb />recently mn Cuba, is now in Washington<lb />and doing some very plain talking,<lb />For instance, he said: oThe Cubéens<lb />will surely succeed unless the policies<lb />of the administration in aiding Spain<lb />crushes hope out of the Cubans. Every<lb />power, the army, the navyythe judiciary,<lb />of this great government ig now in<lb />active operation to aid Spain and crush<lb />the rebellion. Every power will be<lb />exerted during the next administration<lb />to the same end. The money power<lb />demands peace, quiet, rest ; but behind<lb />it all is vhe irresistible, omnipotent, all-<lb />prevailing force of manifest destiny<lb />which controls history, directs the ages,<lb />and is absolutely beyond and above the<lb />the force ot one generation, and controls<lb />them all. In this case, the will, the<lb />hope, the enthusiasm of the American<lb />people overwhelms Wall street and the<lb />peace of the money-changers, and will<lb />have free Cuba.<lb /><lb />Hn. Jon W.
