Coffin ina p-per en-<lb />titled oSouvenirs of a Vct_ran Col-<lb />lectorT in The Century describes<lb />the unique art treasures of Mr. Sam-<lb />uel P, Avery of New York. Mr.<lb />Coffin relates the following story of<lb />one of MeissonierTs most famous<lb />paintings: eae<lb /><lb />The picture shows Marshal Saxe,<lb />with a body of troops, interrogat-<lb />~ing a peasant at a crossroads in the<lb />forest and taking notes. In 1880<lb />Mr. William H. Vanderbilt was sit-<lb />ting to Meissonier for his portrait,<lb />and Mr. Avery and Mr. Lucas were<lb />invited by the artist to come to his<lb />studio during the sittings, as Mr.<lb />Vanderbilt did not speak French.<lb />One day Mr. Vanderbilt asked,<lb />*~What picture does M. Meissonier<lb />think isthe best he ever painted?"T<lb />Meissonier, replying through Mr.<lb />Lucas, spoke of two, the celebrated<lb />o1814 and ~~Le Renseignement.TT<lb />The latter picture, he said, with a!<lb />sigh anil a deeply felt ~~helas, was,<lb />in Germany, in the hands of the!<lb />enemies of France.<lb /><lb />It had been painted for the expo-<lb />sition of 1867 and was bought by|<lb />M. Petit, who asked 50,000 francs<lb />for it. Mr, Walters had offered 40, -<lb />000 francs, but a German banker in<lb />Paris, M. Mayer, paid the price and<lb />got ithe picture. He was a well<lb />known collector, and his family<lb />home was in Dresden. When the<lb />war of 1870 broke out, M. Mayer<lb />left. Paris and took the picture with<lb />him. Mr. Avery had sean his gal-<lb />lery every time he went to Dresden,<lb />and knew the picture.<lb /><lb />~The conversation in the studio<lb /><lb />was indeed a wondcrful canvas.<lb />Petit had tried to buy it back, but<lb />could not get it. It was thought it<lb />wauld be impossible to get Mayer to<lb />sell it, but Avery, authorized by<lb />Mr. Vanderbilt, resolved to try. He<lb />did not wish to make a trip to Dres-<lb /><lb />aan<lb /><lb />den at the timé, so he wrote to<lb />Mayer thata friend of his wanied<lb />the picture, but not as a matter of<lb />~business. It was not to buy to sell<lb />again, The banker replied that he<lb />had often been importuned to sell<lb />the picture, but had invariably re-<lb />fused. - Yet, now that he felt him-<lb />self growing old"he had then reach-<lb />ed the age of 80"and that. as after<lb />his death his family might not care<lb />to keep it, he would take a certain<lb />price for it. Ho added that he might<lb />change his mind overnight, for he<lb />found it hard to decide to sell.<lb />Avery lost no time in telegraphing,<lb />and the next day received the can-<lb />vas by parcels post. The marvelous<lb />picture was actually in his room in<lb />the hotel! A draft on London was<lb />sent to Dresden at once, and the<lb />deed was done.<lb /><lb />Mr. Vanderbilt and his two fellow<lb />conspirators now set about arrang-<lb />ing a surprise for, Meissonier. The<lb />next day was to be the last sitting<lb />for the portrait, and when they ar-<lb />rived at the studio one of them car.<lb />ried a parcel, which was placed in a<lb />safe corner. The sitting proceeded,<lb />and at last Meissonier said the por-<lb />trait was finished. There was not<lb />anothcr touch to be added. ~Now<lb />you may see me sign,TT he announc-<lb />ed, and the act was accomplished<lb />with a duo observance on the part<lb />of the company of the importance<lb />of the moment.<lb /><lb />The artist then went into another<lb />room to put the little portrait in a<lb />frame he had ready for itT ~Le<lb />RenseignementTT was quickly taken<lb />from tho corner, set in a frame on<lb />ihe eascl, and the three men stood<lb />by to see what Mcissonier weuld do.<lb />oWhen he came in and suddenly<lb />saw the picture,T says Mr. Avery,<lb />oho almvust wont crazy in his joy.<lb />410 got (lown on his knees beyore it,<lb />so that he could look at it closely,<lb />and cried out, ~Oh, mon bon tableau;<lb />oh, mon bon tavieau!lT ana with dif-<lb />ficulty found words io express his<lb />delight.
