L. JOYNER.<lb /><lb />The Tobacco Growers and Dealers<lb />Conveution which met at Ocala, Fla.,<lb />January 12, 1897, was an important<lb />gathering in more than one particular,<lb />Very few, if any, of the delegates out-<lb />side the State of Florida had any con-<lb />ception of the objects of the meeting<lb />when they went into convention. Che<lb />delegates were appointed by the Gov..<lb />ernors of the various states by request<lb />of the Governor of Florida to attend a<lb />convention of tobacco growers and<lb />dealers at Ocala, Jan. 12th, and prompt-<lb />ly at 12 oTclock on that date the<lb />President of the Board of Trade of<lb />Ocala, Mr. F. A, Tegue, called the<lb />vonvention to order.<lb /><lb />After reading the call for convention<lb /><lb />oby the Governor, be stated that the<lb />objects ot the convention was to induce<lb />immigration to Florida and interest the<lb />people of the State in growing cigar<lb />_tobuvco. He then introduced Col. W.<lb />oD. Chipley, of Pensacola, as temporary<lb />+ Col. Chipley spoke for twenty min<lb />_ Sajtes. onthe diversified resources of<lb />He said in the winter of 1895<lb /><lb />sian night by & severe treeze the<lb />~people of Florida lost five million | dol-<lb />Sin orange -groves und since that<lb /><lb />~time, while the orange industry was<lb /><lb />a<lb />sha<lb /><lb />heir main dependence, the people had<lb /><lb />industry to. another they hud man-<lb />to get~tlong and make a comfort.<lb />iving, and.now, said he, while the<lb />of 1895. was tar reaching and<lb />in its effect, yet atter all, in his<lb /><lb />=~<lb /><lb />_ $8.00 |. :<lb />25) of welcome. He said to the delegates<lb /><lb />d themselves together and from |<lb /><lb />tobacco fields and take up their sword<lb /><lb />for their country, and the strong<lb />demand tor Cuban tobacco had caused<lb />experiments to be made with it in<lb />Florida which in every case has proven<lb />highly successsful. Thus, said he<lb />CubzTs misfortune is FloridaTs oppor-<lb />tunity. :<lb />After him came the MayorTs address<lb /><lb />and visitors to the Convention that the<lb />latch string to the door of OcalaTs<lb />hospitality hung at the boundary lines<lb />of Florida, and on the part ot the<lb />citizens of Ocala he extended one and<lb />alla most cheerful and hearttelt wel-<lb />come.<lb /><lb />creation) could be sunk and you would<lb />never know it was there except for the<lb />fine wooden nut megs that might be}<lb />seen floating around the top.<lb /><lb />After this the parmanent organiza-<lb />tion was effected anda committee on<lb /><lb />work of the convention.<lb /><lb />The main work consisted in discus"<lb />sions by delegates mainly from different<lb />sections of Florida on the cigar tobacco<lb />industry uf the State.<lb /><lb />Prior to the civil war tobacco was<lb />one of the leading monetary crops of<lb />middle Florida, but for some cause its<lb />culture never spread and while since<lb />that time in different sections ot the<lb />State small crops of it have been grown<lb />not until the last few years has much<lb />attention been given it. Two causes |<lb />have been potent in leading to the<lb />present boom in the tobacco industry.<lb />The severe freeze of 1894-95 almost<lb />literally destroyed the orange industry<lb />which at that time had assumed enor-<lb />mous proportions and Gost the orange<lb />growers, accoraing to good authority,<lb />between five and six million dollars.<lb />Discouraged and disheartened at their<lb />almost destitute condition they began<lb />to look for other resources from which<lb />to make a support.<lb /><lb />About this time the cruel ravages of<lb />the Cuban war had driven many of the<lb />Cuban tobacco planters from their<lb />firms, thus very materially decreasing<lb />the production of Cuban tobacco.<lb /><lb />A few prominent tobacco planters<lb />not caring to participate in the war<lb />came over to Florida to experiment in<lb />Cuban tobacco. The result of their<lb />trials have been highly satisfactory and<lb />during last year there were a number<lb />of cro.s planted in different sections of<lb />the State which were sold at very<lb />satisfactory prices, even under the dis-<lb />advantage of the first yearTs experiment.<lb />These have induced numbers of others<lb />tv engage in tobacco culture this year<lb />and nw doubt the industry will prove a<lb />piotivable and permane. one as the<lb />terruory is so smail in which tobacco is<lb />grown that there is no danger inT over<lb />stocking the market,<lb /><lb />(TO BE CONTINUED.)<lb /><lb />nt, it was a blessing in disguise<lb /><lb />COTTON. *<lb /><lb />Dr. Jenkins, vice Director ot the Good Middling 7h<lb />Connecticut experiment station re-} Middling 61<lb />sponded in behalf of the visiting dele-| Low Middling 64<lb />gates.
