The movement<lb />has become so marked that a<lb />bureau will be established in<lb />Chicago in order that the adyan-<lb />tages of this section may be<lb />prominently put before the people<lb />of the West and Northwest, from<lb />which quarters most of the new<lb />settlars have gone. Immigrants<lb />from Europe have generaliy pre-<lb />ferred to go to the West because<lb />that section has been better<lb />advertised abroad, or on account<lb />ofthe smail cost at which land<lb />could bos obtained in the newer<lb />States. The labor question in the<lb />South has also operated, to some<lb />extent, as a drawback. It is<lb />significant that most of the people<lb />now coming to the South are<lb />those who have tried the West<lb />and h.ye become conyirc.d that<lb />the South offers better advan-<lb />tages. They are, for the most<lb />part, not new settlers, not immi-<lb />grants. a3 the term is commonly<lb />understood. The yreat rush to<lb />the West, which assumed some-<lb />what the phase of a fever some<lb />years ago, has died out toa great<lb />degree. Experiment has shown<lb />that, while land may be somewhat<lb />cheaper out there, the distance<lb />from the seaboard, danger of loss<lb />of crops from.drought, the severe<lb />winters and the lack of facilities<lb />enjoyed by people of the East in<lb />general has operated as discour-<lb />agements. In-counting up profits<lb />and losses at the exd of the year<lb />the farmers have become con-<lb />vinced that even with large crops<lb />- on big farms they canno, make as<lb />much as on smaller farms in the<lb />South, where land is cheap, the<lb />Seasons longer and the markets<lb />aloser.
