The association<lb />has always fostered as far as it<lb />was able every worthy home en<lb />terprise. The indiyidual mem-<lb />bers have made it a rule to buy<lb />at home. By precept. and exam-<lb />ple this principle has been drilled<lb />into our business community until<lb />it bas become the general rule of<lb />practice.<lb /><lb />We believe that nothing else<lb />has contributed so much to the<lb />comparative prosperity which the<lb />business interests of Greensboro<lb />have epjoyed during the last twe<lb />or three years of depression, and<lb />so marked have been the good<lb />effects here of this habit of home<lb />patronage, that we believe the<lb />adoption of the same plar else-<lb />where can be the means of im-<lb />measurable benefit to the State<lb />at large. When you wishe! tho<lb /><lb />-<lb /><lb />/The Manner In Which She Was Taught<lb />to Speak and to Read Speech.<lb />Helen Keller is a household name<lb /><lb />She. is blind as well as deaf. That<lb /><lb />which shut her from the world have<lb />been broken down, that her soul has<lb />been set free and the seal of silence<lb />taken from her lips, seems miracu-<lb />lous to those who know not how it<lb />was done. The limits of this arti¢le<lb />will permit only the briefest out-<lb />line of her story. :<lb />Rendered both deaf and blind at<lb />19 months by severe illness, she<lb />passed the first seven years of her<lb />life in silence, darkness and igno-<lb />rance, Who could have suspected the<lb />exquisite soul imprisoned in that<lb />mute and darkened body? A bright,<lb />patient, loving woman came, and<lb />the miracle began. is<lb />There was only one possible ave-<lb />nue of approdch to the beleaguered |<lb />soul. The sense of touch remained, |<lb />and to that the teacher, Miss Annie<lb />M. Sullivan, addressed her efforts. |<lb />Through finger spelling the child at:<lb />length obtained the idea of lan-<lb />guage, and with thiggrey other doors:<lb />could be unlocked. Having natural.<lb />ly a fine mind, she learned rapidly ,<lb />when once started and developed a<lb />phenomenal memory. |<lb />While Helen received information |<lb />only through'spelling and in limited |<lb />amount, she never forgot. To tell<lb />her something was like writing' it.<lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />fact again months or even ye irs aft- |<lb />erward, you had only to ask for it. |<lb />But later,as she began to read })ooks, |<lb />to meet more people and tor sive,<lb />impressions through more ch nels,<lb />and in larger numbers, her mo:nory ,<lb />ceased to be so absolutely relivl is. |<lb /><lb />Until she was 11 years of a3) hor,<lb />only means of communication was<lb />| by finger spelling. Then, at hor own<lb />urgent request, she was given les<lb />sons in speech by Miss Fuller, prin-|<lb />cipal of the Horace Mann school. |<lb />The rapidity with which she acquir- ,<lb />ed the akility to sneak was uz rece<lb /><lb />the two years that she remained<lb />there she succeeded in acquiring the}: :<lb />power of understanding people when<lb /><lb />; minute when in repose, and also<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />dented. *T"/scSTadancched Thger | -<lb /><lb />spelling asa means of expression |<lb />and has ever since used speech alone.<lb /><lb />But others still -had to communi-<lb />cate with her by their fingers. She<lb />then expressed a strong wish to<lb />learn to read the lips by touching<lb />them with her fingers. For the pur-<lb />pose of attempting this difficult task<lb />and to get special training in speech<lb />she came to the Wright-Humason<lb />school in New York city. During<lb /><lb />they spoke to her, and at the same<lb />time pursued regular courses of<lb />study in arithmotic, history, ~physi-<lb />cal geography, ¥ronch and German.<lb />She has read much of the best liter-<lb />ature and is very intelligent on the<lb />topics of the day. Her own speech<lb />is now excellent, and she has enter-<lb />ed a girlsT school inT Cambridge,<lb />Mass., where she is taking a course<lb />preparatory for Radcliffe college.<lb /><lb />When being spoken to, she places<lb />her indox finger lightly uponT the<lb />lips, while the other fingers rest<lb />upon tho cheek, the middle oné<lb />touching the nose. Her thumb is<lb />upon the larynx. This position gives<lb />her the greatest possible informa-<lb />tion voncorning the: elements: of<lb />which speech is composed,"John<lb />Datton Wright in Century...<lb /><lb />"<lb /><lb />Air Used by a Human Being.<lb /><lb />Here is an opportunity to get this excellent<lb /><lb />magazine for little mo<lb /><lb />We will send the Cosmo-<lb /><lb />ates ar ee<lb /><lb />Dr. Radcliffe Hall makes the fol-, politan and the Kast ern Re-<lb /><lb />lowing interosting calculation on<lb />the amount of air a human being of<lb />the average size and proportions<lb />Will econsuime in tho space of one,<lb /><lb />when in the different degrees of ac-.<lb />tivity.
