In this, as in every other<lb />Southern State, the dog is the<lb />ever-present menace which has<lb />diseouraged the business. The<lb />News and Courier thinks the fear<lb />from this source is over-estimated;<lb />that disaster to the flock from<lb />_dogs, need not necessarily result<lb />oIndeed, it says:<lb /><lb />oWe have recently been inform-<lb />ed that there are 500 sheep in<lb />oup flock on a farm not many<lb />miles from Charleston, and that<lb />they are not much troubled either<lb />by dogs or by wildcats from the<lb />neighboring swamps. The ex-<lb />planation given of this marvel is<lb />simply that strychnine 1s cheap,<lb />and the owner of the flock keeps<lb />asupply on hand. He inspects<lb />his flock in the woods every day,<lb />acd when he finds a dead one,<lb />killed by a dog or cat, he loads<lb />the carcass with some of the<lb />powder and goes about his busi-<lb />ness.
