Not every<lb />man or woman, however well-inten-<lb />tioned, true, and conscientious, can<lb />make the home what it ought to be.<lb />And one of the most fruitful causes of<lb />unhappiness, next to bad temper, is to<lb />be found in poor housekeeping.<lb /><lb />Many a woman, in every respect ad-<lb />mirable and intelligent beyond the av-<lb />erage, cannot entirely grasp the mys-<lb />teries of housekeeping. And that it<lb /><lb />$s not a matter of intelligence is shown<lb /><lb />by the fact that some of the best and<lb /><lb />-|most skillful housewives have been<lb /><lb />those who turned their attention to<lb />little else than the ordering of their<lb />dinners and the scrupulous neatness<lb />of their homes. And who shall say that<lb />these did not make a success of house-<lb />keeping? So many, many things enter<lb />into the housekeeping for the good or<lb />ill of the household. The wife or house-<lb />keeping sister may be orderly, the hus-<lb />band or brothers the reverse; or the<lb />wife totally regardless of system, while<lb />the husband counts a misplaced article<lb />or a late breakfast an unpardonable sin<lb />for which no future punctuality or neat-<lb />ness may condone; and these things<lb />occurring day after day, year in and<lb />year out, a consequent struggle en-<lb />sues which renders life a martyrdom.<lb /><lb />The more trivial the occasion, the more<lb /><lb />bitter the sense of defeat.<lb /><lb />oOh, said a woman, whose house-<lb />keeping was to her as the grinding<lb />of the pilgrimTs pebbles in his shoes,<lb />oTI know I am a miserable failure as<lb />a housekeeper! I can do half a dozen<lb />things well, but I canno} keep a house.<lb />Now., there is no more reason in the<lb />world why that woman should wear<lb />herself into nervous prostration trying<lb />to do a thing that in all her life she<lb />will never compass than there is that<lb /><lb />any man should become a lawyer when<lb />his tastes and aptitude are for medi-<lb />cine or mechanism.<lb /><lb />oMy wife and I are much fonder of<lb />each other since we sit down every day<lb />with a dozen people than when we dined<lb />alone, said a jolly husband, who went<lb />through life very respectably and hap-<lb />pily, though he never had a home. It<lb /><lb />is sad, but nevertheless true, that the<lb />dispositions of some couples change en-<lb /><lb />tirely for the better as soon as they<lb /><lb />are freed from the shackles of house-<lb />keeping. Faultfinding ceases, anxious<lb />lines smooth away, and both husband<lb />and wife draw a long breath of relief.<lb /><lb />T have known a most devoted hus-<lb /><lb />band and wife who, after the various<lb /><lb />Slade Chapman, Populist.<lb />Poik"Grayson Alredge, Re-<lb />publ'can.<lb />Kandolph"J J White, ropulist,<lb />and J M Allen, Republican.<lb />Richmond"Claude<lb />Republican, and Y C Morton,<lb /><lb />Dockery,<lb /><lb />domestic complications caused by the<lb />civil war, looked the matter of house-<lb />keeping squarely in the face.
