He said his regiment"the, 8th,<lb />in which he was a company commander<lb />__was in camp at Kinston. A courier<lb />brought the news there that the Fed-<lb />eral troops had camped at Greeuville<lb />and were burning and destroying every-<lb />thing before them. Col. Shaw with his<lb />regiment, the 8th, a battery of artilery<lb />and some other troops, made a rapid<lb />march over to Greenville to altack the<lb />Yauks and to protect the people.<lb /><lb />The report turned out to be false<lb />and the troops all returned the next<lb />day. The Governor tells us that his<lb />regiment camped that night"the 8th<lb /><lb />of November, T62"in the woods on<lb /><lb />the old plank road about two miles<lb />from Greenville near Mr, John Stanley<lb />SmithTs, that he went to sleep with<lb />some pine straw and the earth for his<lb />bed and a blanket aud the sky for his<lb />t he woke up the next<lb /><lb />covering, and tha<lb />about two inches in<lb /><lb />morning coyered up<lb />snow.<lb /><lb />He also tells us that he came jute 1own<lb />early that morning, the 9th ot Nov. 762,<lb />and that it was sull snowing, tkat about<lb />ten oTclock ne received orders to act as<lb />officer of the Rear Guard on a_ forced<lb />march back to Kinston and that he left<lb />Greenville about eleven © clock, and<lb />that they were compelled to go by the<lb />y of Hookerton to cross the Content-<lb />went into camp al<lb />He also says<lb />ing the day<lb /><lb />wa<lb />nea, and that he<lb />Kinston betore dark.<lb />that the snow melted dur<lb />and that it made the roads very sloppy<lb />and disagreeable.<lb />back to Kinston was tliat<lb />eived ~that �"�orning<lb />by Col.
