The Bryan tide which<lb />startedin Michigan and Minneso-<lb />ta ten days ago and made those<lb />States certain, instead of uoubt-<lb />ful, reached Iilinois this week<lb />and now that State can also be<lb />put down in the certain culumn.<lb />This ianguage is considered very<lb />significant in Washington, be-<lb />cause Senator Butler has been so<lb />verv careful in expressing his<lb />contidence and in making claims<lb />that some over enthusiastic Vem-<lb />ocrats have been inclined to ac-<lb />cuse him of being lukewarm in<lb /><lb />the support of Mr. Bryan. Mr.<lb /><lb />Butler is a young wan and he did<lb /><lb />not care to endanger his future<lb /><lb />political prestige by making<lb /><lb />claims until he had carefully. gone<lb /><lb />over the field and ascertained to<lb /><lb />his own satisfaction just what the<lb /><lb />real nitaation was. ~This he has<lb /><lb />done, and the result is his an-<lb /><lb />nouncement that oBryan will be<lb /><lb />elected. All the information re-<lb /><lb />ceived by Democrats points to<lb /><lb />the correctness of Senator Bat-<lb /><lb />lerTs announcement.<lb /><lb />A gentleman who is a Demo-<lb /><lb />crat as well as an old personal<lb /><lb />friend of Mr. BryanTs said, speak-<lb /><lb />ing of the Republican assertion<lb /><lb />that the Democratic<lb />Committee made a specific charge<lb />in cash for Mr. BryanTs speeches<lb />and that those towns that did not<lb />put up the money were passed<lb />by: oI havenTt the slightest hes-<lb />itation in pronouncing that story<lb />to be alie, although it is entirely<lb />probable that some representa-<lb />tive of the National committee<lb />has passed around the hat among<lb />Democrats in towns that have<lb />been yisited by Mr. Bryan, as the<lb />committee has had to resort to all<lb />sorts of schemes to raise money<lb />to keep the campaign going and<lb />has at no time had all that it<lb />wight have used legitimately aud<lb />profitably. A Washington mau<lb />who is not wealthy by any means<lb /><lb />{came to me with a $100 note,<lb /><lb />which he asked to nave handed<lb />to Mr. Bryan to be used for his<lb />personal expenses, without any<lb />mention of the donator.<lb /><lb />oThe Cude.T<lb />About the most absurd thing,<lb />it seems to the writer, in the med-<lb />ical profession, is some dreadful<lb /><lb />|thing the M.
