It is a sad<lb />and discouraging fact that there<lb />HAS NOT BEEN A SINGLE<lb />RESPONSE TO THAT AP-<lb />PEAL. Have you noticed that<lb />we are not conducting an active<lb />and vigorous campaign. Do you<lb />know why? If you donot, I will<lb />tell you. It is because the mem-<lb />bers of the PeopleTs party are<lb />not doing a single thing to help<lb />run a campaigo. A campaign<lb />wont run itself. It requires some<lb />money to do anything. Do you<lb />know any source from which it is<lb />coming except THE PEOPLE?<lb />If you do, I would we glad for<lb />you to point us to that source. ~ If<lb />the people shall sit atill, do noth-<lb />ing, contribute nothing, what can<lb />they expect of us.<lb /><lb />Your township can certa~ly con-<lb />tribute as much as two or three<lb />dollars, and cught todo so AT<lb /><lb />needed. Ina young and<lb />vigorous party this1s a strange<lb />condition of affairs. It indicates<lb />great apathy, if not defection,<lb />among the rank and file of the<lb />PeopleTs party. The cause is not<lb />far to seek. There has been an<lb />infamous betrayal of eyery prin-<lb />ciple the party holds dear, and<lb />for what? To keep in office or<lb />to provide offices for a gang of<lb />~trading and professional politi-<lb />cians. It will be observed thai<lb />the men who have pledged ~the<lb /><lb />PeopleTs party to this base deal<lb /><lb />and trade are either in office<lb />already or expect to secure: office<lb />thereby. Why in this cam<lb />paign, pray, when, by ashameless<lb />trade every party principle is<lb />abandoned, should we be expect-<lb />ed to -vote for the fusion candi-<lb />dates? Is it because those who<lb />assume to be out leaders and<lb />traffic in our votes, command us<lb /><lb />to vote the ticket ? We are not<lb />chattles to be dealt with in this<lb />manner. We are not owned by<lb />any map or set of men. We have<lb />been taught to beleive that the<lb />free coinage of silver was the one<lb />thing to be desired by the far-<lb />mers. In what way 1s that cause<lb />to be promcted by a fusion with<lb />gold standard Republicanrs upon<lb />State. Congressional and county<lb />tickets? These are some ques-<lb />tions which are not clear to the<lb />average Populist. We wish to<lb />know, amoog otber things:<lb /><lb />1. Why, if the PeopleTs party<lb />is sincere in adyocating the elec"<lb />tron of Bryan it should tie his<lb />hards by sending to Congress<lb />White, Settle, Linney and Pear-<lb />son, gold standard Republicans?<lb /><lb />9. Why, if the PeopleTs party<lb />believes in the ~ree coinage of<lb />silver, itshould sanction the trade<lb />in this Congressional district<lb />whereby in return for Republi-<lb />can votes for Skinner for Con-<lb />gress Populist members of the<lb />Legis:ature must vote for Pritch"<lb />ard, a gold standard man, for<lb />Senator ?<lb /><lb />8. Loss than six months ago<lb />Senator Butler and his committee<lb />insisted that two political parties<lb />could not honorably unite without<lb />some common principle or bond<lb />of union.
