Never has this truth<lb />been more practically illustrated<lb />and exemplified than today,<lb />when again it asks the suffrage<lb />of the freemen of North Caro-<lb />lina.<lb /><lb />If the Chicago platform of 1892<lb /><lb />-|did not express the people's<lb /><lb />wishes, or if the administration<lb />of the principles then enunciated<lb />have not been in accord with the<lb />popular demand, the Democratic<lb />party, as the ancient and well-<lb />tried organization through which<lb />the people have sougtt and ob-<lb /><lb />: tained their rights, is now in the<lb /><lb />peopleTs full control. The clear<lb />and positive expression of the<lb />popular will in our State and ns-<lb />tiona! declaration of privciples<lb />leaves no lingering doubt in the<lb />minds of a long-suffering people.<lb />And this complete assurance of<lb /><lb />jthe reforms demanded has satis-<lb />fied every ardent expectation by}<lb />|fixing as the executive of the<lb /><lb />laws to be enacted men whose<lb />lives are the living issues ~of the<lb /><lb />dav.. /<lb />Democratic ~fait lies in those<lb /><lb />immutab)e principles which pre-<lb />serves human liberty. It has<lb />brought them ont of the past as<lb />principles immorta!, and ever liv-<lb />ing, and, in the course uf years,<lb /><lb />as exigencies have srisen, Demo-<lb /><lb />the white people would give them<lb />a dominant position. Not only<lb />this, but we have the boastful as-<lb />surance of the Republican party<lb />officials in the press of the coun-<lb />try that the illegal registration of<lb />the blacks would give the State<lb />to McKinley.<lb />All these matters have met our<lb />consideration. In such a crisis<lb />the Democratic party rallies to<lb />the support of the people. North<lb />Carolinians must come together<lb />to protect North Carolina. The<lb />intelligence and virtue of the<lb />land must control. White men<lb />must be asked tu unite. In this<lb />Spirit, the spirit of Democracy,<lb />your committee, on October 13th,<lb />frankly asked co-operation of<lb />others whose interesT, shouid be<lb />our interest. A co operation ticket<lb />was Offered to the PeopleTs party<lb />for a complete arrangement in<lb />the interest of silver and the rule<lb />of North Carolina by wise and<lb />upright officers. This proposi-<lb />tion the PeopieTs party, through<lb />lis executive commitee, declined.<lb />In this effort at unity, the Dem-<lb />ocratic committee felt that the<lb />heart of the peopie was w.th it.<lb />If to some this action was without<lb />proper authority or humiliating<lb />to party pride the answer is plain.<lb />The Democratic party acted in<lb />this as in all its great move-<lb />ments, regardless of form when<lb />it seeks the substance, knowing<lb />no pride save its proud heritage<lb />of serving the people.
