He paid<lb />a high tribute to Col. W. H. Lucas,<lb />the Democratic nominee, oAgainst him<lb />is a man without conscience, character<lb />or credit, and aman who nas broken<lb />up more homes than any other man in<lb />the county.� He then exposed some<lb />of the record of Harry Skinner, the*fu-<lb />sion candidate. He said he could point<lb />out many men who had paid Skinner<lb />25 per cent. interest on money. He<lb />also told several iastances, giving names<lb />ot the parties, vhere Skinner collected<lb />money for northern firms out of our<lb />home dealers, pocacted the money and<lb />reported the man from whom it was<lb />collected as bad, thus robbin one man<lb /><lb />~ot his money and another of his char"<lb /><lb />Ore of the<lb />down a<lb /><lb />acter et the same time.<lb />firms thus swindled turned<lb />second erder from a merchant sent in<lb />by their salesman, furnishing the latter a<lb />letter from Skinner saying the merchant<lb />was no good. he salesman not be-<lb />lieving the statements made in the let-<lb />ter investigated the matter. Satistying<lb />himself that the bill had been paid by<lb />i the merchant he took the letter to<lb />SkinnerTs office and demanded an ex-<lb />planation, Skinner seeing be was cor<lb />nered tried to shift off the blame on his<lb />clerk. But the salesman, who was none<lb />other than Willian<lb />Russ, now Mayor of Raleigh, would<lb /><lb />the well known<lb /><lb />not accept any such statement and de-<lb />manded the collected money or blood<lb />on the spot. He got the money.<lb /><lb />Mr. Laughinghouse related otaer in"<lb />stances almost similar to this.
