C.�<lb /><lb />" Deere<lb /><lb />Brimstone Cures Diphtheria<lb /><lb />A few years ago, when diphthe-<lb />ria was raging in England a gen<lb />tleman accompanied the cele-<lb />brated Dr. Field on his rounds<lb />to witness the so-called owonder-<lb />ful cures� which he performed,<lb />while the patients of others were<lb />dropping on ail sides. All he<lb />took with him was powder of<lb />sulphur and a quill, and with<lb />these he cured every patient<lb />without exception"that is, he put<lb />a teaspoonful of flour of brim-<lb />stone in a winegliass of water and<lb />stirred it with his fingers instead<lb />of aspoon, as sulphur does not<lb />readily amalgamate with water,<lb />and on the sulpbur becoming<lb />well mixed he gave it as » gargle<lb />and 1n tea minutes the patient<lb />was out of danger, as brimstone<lb />kills every species of fungus in a<lb />man, beast or plant in a few min-<lb />utes. Instead of spitting out the<lb />gargle he recommended the swal-<lb />lowing of it, and in extreme cases,<lb /><lb />in the nick of time, when the fun-<lb />gus was too nearly closing to<lb />allow the gargling: he blew the<lb />sulphur§ through a quill into the<lb />throat, and after the fungus had<lb />shrunk to allow of it, then the<lb />gargling. He never 10st a pa-<lb />tient from diphtheria. Or if the<lb />patient cannot gargle. take a live<lb />coal, put it on a shovel, and<lb />sprinkle a spoonful or two of the<lb />brimstone at a time uponit.
