Gentry Paces a Mile in Two<lb />Minutes and a Half Second.<lb /><lb />Portland, Me., September 24."At<lb />Rigby track today the worldTs pacing<lb />record was bioken by John R. Gentry,<lb />the magnifiicent horse pacing the fast-<lb />harness and<lb /><lb />est mile ever wade in<lb /><lb />placing the worldTs revord at only a<lb />helf second over two minutes, or 2:005.<lb />Gentry was roundly applauded when<lb />he appeared on the track for his great<lb /><lb />Ife<lb /><lb />track several times betore,<lb /><lb />had oeen out on the<lb /><lb />and had<lb /><lb />trial of speed.<lb /><lb />been the centre of all eyes.<lb /><lb />A<lb /><lb />When W. S. Andrews drove him on<lb />the track for the effort to break his<lb />record, the air was chilly and a light<lb />northwesteriv breeze blew up the home<lb />stretch. Fis record before starting was<lb />2:014, which he made September 8th<lb />at Glen falis, N. Y., in the secord heat<lb />of arace with Star Pointer. Andrews<lb />had driven Gentry two warming up<lb />miles, and it was nearly sunset when<lb />he was ready to start for the event<lb />| mile.<lb />A runner appeared with Gentry to<lb />Aftier twice An-<lb />drews came down to the wire to pace<lb /><lb />pace him. scuring<lb />the fastest mile ever accomplished by<lb />a horse in harness. The crowd began to shout and<lb />hurrah, and Andrews shouted encour-<lb />agingly to his horse. The runnerTs<lb />driver als» urged his horse and used<lb />the whip sparingly. All this nerved<lb />the pacer to a supreme effort and it<lb />can be seen how noble an effort he<lb />made, for with the wind in his face he<lb />made the last quarter quicker than the<lb />third quarter, doing it in 304, and thus<lb />covering his wile ii two minuters and<lb />one-half second. ~This was a whole<lb />second less than his former record,<lb />which had never been surpassed by<lb />any horse, and only equaled by Robert<lb />J.
