SErTEMBER 10rH, 1596.<lb /><lb />How Tickets Wili Be Arranged at the<lb />Next Election"The Ballot Boxes.<lb /><lb />mabe tepnenle ened<lb /><lb />The new election law, enacted<lb />by the last Legislature, directs<lb />that all the candidates shall be<lb />voted for on two separate ballots.<lb />which must ve deposited in two<lb />boxes. On one ballot or ticket<lb />must be the names of the candi-<lb />dates for Governor, Lieutenant<lb />Governor, Secretary of State,<lb />Auditor, Treasurer, Superinten-<lb />devt of Public Instruction, Attor-<lb />ney General, member of Con-<lb />gress, justices of the Supreme<lb />Court, judge ot the Superior<lb />Court, and presidental electors.<lb />And on the other ballot must be<lb />the names of the candidates for<lb />the Legislature, county treasurer<lb />(if thers be one), register of<lb />deeds, sheriff, coroner, surveyor,<lb />constable and magistrates in each<lb />township, and county commis-<lb />sioners.<lb /><lb />Thus there will be two long<lb />tickets, ove containing 22 names<lb />and the other containing 14<lb />names. ~These ballots may be<lb />partly printed and partly written<lb />on paper of any color and may<lb />have a deyice on them.<lb /><lb />This new election law also di-<lb />rects that four ballot boxes shall<lb />be made for every precinct, and<lb />each of the boxes must be large<lb />enough oto contain one cubic foot.<lb />of inside measurement and shall<lb />be provided with a good, strong<lb />lock and key. ~The ballots must<lb />ba deposited in two of the boxes,<lb />and when counted (at the close of<lb />the polls), musi be deposited in<lb />the other two boxes and carried<lb /><lb />, to the clerkTs office for safe keep-<lb />ing. These boxes (four for every<lb />~ precinct) must be paid for by the<lb />county commissioners and will be<lb />qaite an expensive item in every<lb />ocounty.<lb /><lb />Sere<lb /><lb />emmmnnenteny<lb /><lb />Japan Taking Our Cotton.<lb />It has been officially announced<lb />that Japan will buy the cotton<lb />- ghe needs for her mills in New<lb /><lb />Orleans.<lb /><lb />om American cotton is the best in<lb />~the world for general manufac-<lb />turing purposes, and as the Japa-<lb />nese are a shrewd people. it is to<lb /><lb />be expected that they would use<lb />-jtin the extensive cotton mills<lb />they have recently built.<lb /><lb />It is also natural that they<lb />should bay their cotton from<lb />New Orleans as that is the center<lb />of the cotton trade in this coun-<lb />try-<lb /><lb />nae The Japanese mills already use<lb />,, between 75,000 and 100,000 bales<lb />of cotton a year. and this con-<lb /><lb />yamption is constantlyjincreasing.<lb /><lb />iF<lb /><lb />the overcrowded islands belong-<lb />ing to Japan where there is not)<lb />\enough land to give employment<lb /><lb />he people of Japan buy im")<lb /><lb />in agriculture to all the popula-<lb /><lb />tion and where labor can be had<lb /><lb />very cheap. Several cotton mills<lb />which were located on the Pacific<lb /><lb />leoast have been transferred to<lb /><lb />Japan on account of these attrac-<lb /><lb />tions and in the belief that the},<lb /><lb />demand for cotton goods will in-<lb />crease rapidly in the Orient.<lb /><lb />* Japan is already a considerable<lb />purchaser of our cotton and it<lb />seems certain that her demand<lb /><lb />|for it will increase very largely."<lb /><lb />Atlanta Journal.<lb /><lb />Sewall deserves more credit for<lb />being for free silver than Tom<lb />Watson does. In Georgia, where<lb />Watson lives, the great majority<lb />of the people ara for free silver<lb />and he 18 on the popular side, but<lb />in Maine where Sewall lives the<lb />great majority are against free<lb />silver and he is on the unpopular<lb />side. A man shows much more<lb />sincerity and courage iu advoca-<lb />ting a measure that is unpopular<lb />with his neighbors, than one that<lb />is popular and advocated by<lb />everybody around him. Why then<lb />doubt SewallTs sincerity any more<lb />than WatsonTs ?<lb /><lb />Oh, but it is said that he owns<lb /><lb />stock in corporations, and there-<lb />fore Populisis cannot trast him,<lb />How then can they trust and vote<lb />for a candidate for Goyervor,<lb />who not only owns stock in sever-<lb />al corporations bat is a corpora"<lb />tion lawyer and railroad attor-<lb />ney ?<lb />« Democrats do not doubt Ma}.<lb />GuthrieTs sincerity for silyer nor<lb />censure him bevause he is a cor-<lb />poration lawver, nor should Pop-<lb />ulists doubt SewallTs sincerity<lb />simply because he is a stockhold-<lb />er in some corporations !"Pitts-<lb />boro Record.<lb /><lb />Dr. Frank P. How can Populists<lb />accept and consent to such a re-<lb />quirement ?<lb /><lb />What does it mean ?<lb /><lb />It means that every Populist,<lb />who is elected to the Legislature<lb />by such a fasion, must vote for<lb />the re election of Senator Pritch-<lb /><lb />ard, because he has already been<lb />nominatedT by the Republican<lb /><lb />ere aad gh .<lb />Pritchard. ig. fo<lb />ae Renn ae: t<lb /><lb />f ver |<lb /><lb />| Capital'$50,000.00."<lb /><lb />1 W.
