Every<lb />I"ederal office was in tbe hands<lb /><lb />on these officials to compel them<lb />to give monev to the canvass and<lb />to work for the Kepublican can-<lb />didates.<lb /><lb />With all this effort Mr. Harrison<lb />polled only the vote of 1590"|<lb />100,000. Weaver's vote 47,000 and |<lb />ClevelandTs 132,000. The combined<lb />Republican and Populist vote of<lb />1894 was 142,000, andthe Demo-<lb />cratic vote was 121,000. This<lb />shows a loss of 11,000 for the<lb />Democrats on the vote of 1892,<lb />and 5,000 less than the combined<lb />Republican and Populist vote of<lb />1892. Allowing tuat the new<lb />election law will add 20,000 votes<lb />to the Ropublicans, which would<lb />strength 154,000<lb /><lb />votes onthe basis of 1883, we<lb /><lb />mustthen deduet from this vote<lb />the colored voters who left the<lb /><lb />State in 1889.<lb /><lb />At the town of Selma alone 20,-<lb />000 emigration tickets were soid<lb />duriug this year. There were<lb />probably as many more so'd<lb />throughout the State, Of this<lb />number, 10,000 were colored men<lb />and voters. Then in all the coun-<lb />ties where che negro vote is large<lb />nearly all the white Republicans<lb />left and went to the populist par-<lb />ty. There must have been 20,000<lb />of these. This would bring down<lb />the Republican vote to 124,000<lb />Now take 26.000 from the Demo-<lb />cratic vote of 147,000 and it gives<lb />121,000, the Democratic vote of<lb /><lb />1894, which discloses the fact that<lb />at least 21,000<lb />the Populist ticket in 1894, which<lb />wouid leave the next straight Re-<lb />publican vote 103,000.<lb /><lb />McKinley on a single gold<lb />standard platform cannot poll<lb /><lb />more thau thres-four ths of this<lb />vote.<lb /><lb />what you believe is best for the<lb />success of the head of the ticket.<lb /><lb />The principles we are fighting<lb /><lb />for are paramount to any personal |<lb />consideration that the latter<lb />ghonid not have any weight or<lb /><lb />influence on your action.<lb />[ cannot tor a morment allow<lb /><lb />myself to bea factor 1p ary action<lb />on your part that would io the<lb />slightest degree bazard an vlecto-<lb /><lb />ral. vote for you.<lb />With kind regards to Mrs. Bry-<lb /><lb />ab, believe me your sincere<lb />friend,<lb /><lb />ARTHUR SEWALL.<lb /><lb />Chairman Jones, referring to<lb />the above letter, said:<lb /><lb />oThe talk about the retirement<lb />of our candidate for Vice Presi-<lb />dentiis too absurd to be serieas-<lb />ly considereu.
