The Republi-<lb />cans and Poputists have held their<lb />convention and the results are<lb />kuown. Though they are as op-<lb />posite in their demands as dark-<lb />ness and light yet, they have dis-<lb />carded every questien as to the<lb />folly of the course, and have<lb />fused. There can be but two rea-<lb />sons for for this action,"firat for<lb />pie and secondly to beat the Dem-<lb />ocrats. Harry Skinner Thursday<lb />in his speech asked the question,<lb />oWhat did we dotwo years ago<lb />by fasion? And very promptly<lb />mee it by saying we beat the<lb />Democrats. This was heartily<lb />applauded by the delegates. We<lb />have the combination before us.<lb />Populists demanding free silver,<lb />and swearing a few months ago<lb />that they would not vote for any<lb />man who favored the electidn ot<lb />McKinley, now running on a tick-<lb />et with men who ~would even.<lb />scorn the very idea of supporting |<lb />_ anybody but McKinley. There are men though, who<lb />are good Democrats, who will be<lb />too busy to attend these meet-<lb />dings tomorrow. We ask the bus.<lb />jness men of Greenville if it will<lb />not pay them to take one hour<lb />from their business and attend<lb />these Primaries.<lb /><lb />The next: duty to the party is<lb /><lb />gate or alternate shall attend the<lb />convention next Thursday and<lb />bring eyervy Democrat in his com-<lb />munity with him, and every Pop<lb />ulist and Republican too, if they<lb />can be induced to come. It<lb />would do them gaod to see a<lb />Democratic convention.<lb /><lb />The next duty is that the dele-<lb />gates to this convention shall se-<lb />lect men for the various offices in<lb />the county who are competent<lb />and have the utmost confidence<lb /><lb />entire countv. If this is done the<lb />result in November will show<lb />that the people of Pitt county<lb />will never elect a ticket running<lb />on the platform with two planks:<lb />1. Pie. 2. Anything to veat the<lb />Democrats.<lb /><lb />Already the more thonghtful<lb />who voted °with Populists two<lb />years ago are saying that their<lb />vutes shall express their desires<lb />and not pie and spite. We bo-<lb />lieve there are several hundred of<lb />this class in the county.
