The first<lb />two days of the week continued warm,<lb />but on the 18th very beneficial rains<lb />occurred at alarge number of places,<lb />foilowing which the temperature drop-<lb />ped below the normal, with some agree-<lb />ably cool nights. The rainfall was<lb />not sufficient to break the drought gen"<lb />erally, but caused some improvement in<lb />the crop conditions.<lb /><lb />EASTERN DISTRICT<lb /><lb />Past week was favorable. Good<lb />rains occured on several dates, chiefly<lb />on the 18th, but small in amount, and<lb />were folloned by several agreeably<lb />cooler days. Late corn, peas, turnips<lb />and potitoes were benefitted, The ex-<lb />tent te which cotton has been cut off<lb />over the State is variously estimated<lb />from one-fourth toTonehalf, Cotton ts<lb />opening rapidly and will all be picked<lb />out by the middle of October. It<lb />needs more rain to mature bolls, though<lb />rain would prosably notcause any New<lb />bolis to form. Early corn came<lb />through all right, but late is poor,<lb />though aided by showers this week.<lb />Fodder is nearly all pulled in the South.<lb />Curing tobacco about finished. Mak<lb />ing sorgaum syrup has begun. sais<lb />broughy out turnip seeds and further<lb />planting is progressing. Peas are<lb />forming fruit fairly ; rice and sweet po<lb />tatoes are still very good; pea-nuts<lb />suffered considerably from the drought.<lb /><lb />CENTRAL DISTRICT.<lb /><lb />The hot spell was broken on the<lb />18th and cooler, pleasant weather fol-<lb />lowed, which was more benefi-ial to<lb />those pulling fodder and picking cotton<lb />than to crops. Scattered raivs occurred<lb />on Tuesday, but many counties rv main<lb />entirely dry and experienced further<lb />decline in crop conditions, Cotton 1s<lb /><lb />still shedding in places; is opening fast,<lb />especially on sandy land, lint is short<lb />and the crop generally a great dis.<lb />appointment. In many places foader<lb />is allsaved ; not mucna will be made<lb />frum late corn, ~Tobacco is generally<lb />poer and not curing 80 well, thongh it<lb />seoms to be all right in color, and the<lb /><lb />potatoes are needing rain, Some farm-<lb />ers have begun to maxe sorghum mo-<lb />lasses. Soil not fitfor plowing.<lb /><lb />WESTERN DISTRICT.<lb /><lb />The first part of the week was still<lb />warm and dry, but followed by local<lb />showers and cooler weather: a few<lb />nights were very cool. Favorable<lb />showers occurred on the 18th and 22d,<lb />but by no means sufficient to break the<lb />| drought, while over large portions of the<lb />district no rain has fallen. The general<lb />crop c¢ndition have, however, improved<lb />Cott n still inclined to wilt and shed<lb />tors, some fields much worse than<lb />others; bolls are small; picking pro-<lb />greasing with prospects for nothing like<lb />a full crop. Fodder-pulling fully under<lb />way; With sufficiet rain late corn would<lb />make a short crop. ~Tobacco seems to<lb />be curing nicely, Cabbage is not<lb />much guod; peas and sweet potatoes<lb />doing tolerably well ; molasses making<lb />begun; some plowing and seedieg tur-<lb />nins was accomplished ; Jarge amounts<lb />of excellent hay stacked and ready for-<lb />housing in the west.<lb /><lb />He Wul Make the Fleas Hop.<lb />Hon.
