Dr. T. DeWitt Talmage, at East-<lb />hampton, L. L., after a long tour of the<lb />Southern States.<lb /><lb />The reverend gentleman is a keen<lb />ebserver, und can see which way ths<lb />wiud blows. ag quickly, and with as<lb />much certainty as the shrewdest of pol-<lb />iticians. He does not only preach to<lb />the people, but he mingles with them,<lb />feeling the popular pulse and searching<lb />the hearts of his countrymen.<lb /><lb />Dr. Talmage arrived at Easthampton<lb />on Friday last from Chautauqua, where<lb />he had attended an educational conven-<lb />tion. Not only in the big cities did the<lb />Doctor mingle with the residents, but<lb />in remote and sparsely populated dis-<lb />tricts and in minor townships and _yil-<lb />lages.<lb /><lb />ALMOST ALL FOR SILVER.<lb /><lb />oDuring my eatire trip,T he said, o1<lb />did not find more than one or two men<lb />who were not silverites. The unanim-<lb />ity was astounding. The sentiment<lb />down South is universally for the white<lb />metal. Bryan and Sewall will get a<lb />very large vote from that section of the<lb />eountry.�<lb /><lb />Dr. Talmage is too little or too much<lb />of a polisician to come out flatfooted for<lb />free silver, but his utterances are per-<lb />haps sufficiently signiticant to show the<lb />tendencies of his personal feelings.<lb />«My associations and taining and<lb />my political affilations of the past place<lb /><lb />he cautiously said, and then, as a twink-<lb />le came into his eye, he added: ~But<lb />I certainly believe that instead of dis<lb />aster and ruin following in the wake<lb />of the silver movement, the opposite<lb />will be the result.<lb />oI am not advocating that side of the<lb />political question,� said the diplomatic<lb />divine, obut Ido not believe, with a<lb />good many of my Christian friends,that<lb />in the success of that movement. the<lb />evuntry will greatly suffer.�<lb />~This is a strong nation,� he added.<lb />oWe are engaged in a great political<lb />campaign, and it will ill betit me to be<lb />a strong pattisan on either side.<lb />There are honest, Christian, patriotic<lb />men on both sides, and the life of the<lb />country and welfare of its interests wil]<lb />be a great incentive to lead men in the<lb />right direction. L. By united ef-<lb />torta among the farmers this evil was<lb />averted and the huge octopus which<lb />had fastened itself on the agricultural<lb />industry was destroyed. To-day we<lb />are confronted bya similar trouble.<lb />The manufacturers of cotton ties have<lb />formed another grand combination and<lb />without any reason, except to gratify<lb />unlawtul greed, have entered into an<lb />agreement to advance the price of their<lb />gonds 100 per cent. As the<lb />water evaporates this ring remains<lb />as a fine, powdery mass, so much<lb />resembling sulphurgs to have given<lb />rise to the popular name of sulphur<lb />showers. ~This so called sulphur is,<lb />of course, not really sulphur, but<lb />when examined under the micro.<lb />scope is found to be made up of a<lb />mass of the yellowish pollen grains<lb />of pine trees.
