This<lb />is very encouraging. [he one requis<lb />ite at the present time is moderation<lb />in discussion, the use of facts instead of<lb />epithets. Many of the advocates of<lb />gold have been too emphatic and as<lb />severative in referring to the silver<lb />question, and many of the silver advo-<lb />cates have beon ledinto the same er-<lb />ror Let us keep cool and settle the<lb />problem on its merits."Norfolk Land-<lb />mark. 9<lb /><lb />comers<lb />Tne New Ballot Boxes.<lb />The Charlotte News says: A good<lb />deal of curiosity was attracted to one of<lb />the rooms in the court house to-day,<lb />where the ballot boxes to be used in<lb />the coming election are stacked up.<lb />Clerk Morrow had them built accor-<lb />ding to the legislative requirements<lb />and they look like wheat bins. ~There<lb /><lb />it, My first desire is to aid in securing<lb />the immediate restoration by the United<lb />States of the free and unlimited coin-<lb />age of gold and silver at the present<lb />legal ratio of 16 to 1, without waiting<lb />for the aid or consent of any cther na-<lb />tion. The Republican platform de-<lb />clares that the bimetallic system should<lb />be [restored, but asserts that we as a<lb /><lb />people are helpless to secure bimetal-<lb /><lb />lism for ourselves until foreign nations<lb />come to our assistace. We cannot af<lb />ford to surrender our right to. legislate<lb />for our people upon every question,<lb />and so long as that right is disputed,<lb />no other question can approach it in<lb />importance.<lb />o] appreciate the desire manifested<lb />at St. Louis to consolidate all the free-<lb />silver forces, and regret that they did<lb />not nominate Mr. Sewall also. He<lb />stands squarely upon the-Chioxgo plat-<lb />form, and has defended our cause<lb />against greater oppposition than we<lb />have bad to meet in the West or Soath.<lb />The Populist platform is onmapy ques.<lb />tions substantially identical with the<lb />Chicago platform. It goes beyond the<lb />Chicago platform, however, and en-<lb />dorses some policies which I do not<lb />approve of. All that I can say now<lb />4g that my action will depend entirely<lb />' upon the conditions atiached to the<lb />nomination. I shall do nothing which<lb />will endanger the success of bimetallism<lb />nor shat I do anything unfair to Mr.<lb />Sewall,<lb /><lb />er ee<lb />POPULIST NATIONAL COMMIT-<lb />TEE,<lb /><lb />emcee<lb /><lb />Same O14 Disposition to Talk"Butler<lb />«+» Bheeted Chairman.<lb /><lb />ae<lb />mane<lb /><lb />Bt. What we fail to<lb />observe is any symptom of a desire on<lb />the part of the republicans to drop par-<lb />tisanship, They invite sound money<lb />democrats to join them in putting into<lb />power a republican administration on a<lb />plattorm pledged to the enactment of<lb />measures odious to democrats and as<lb />democrats believe injurious to the<lb />country.<lb />This is a true statement of the case.<lb />It is simply a choice between Bryan, a<lb />free silver democrat, and McKinley,<lb />who represents a platlorm odious in<lb />every plank to a southern democrat.<lb />Choose ye this day whom you will<lb />serve,"Raleigh News and Observer.<lb />EEE<lb />TEDDY'S QUERY.<lb />One brother was tall and slim,<lb />The other chubby and short"<lb />Teddy sat looking at them one night,<lb />Apparently lost in thought. .<lb /><lb />oMamma, he asked at length,<lb />oWhich would you like the best,"<lb />For me to grow north and south, like<lb />- Tom,<lb />Or like Willie, from east to weat ?<lb /><lb />for<lb /><lb />i s at<lb /><lb />Sa ag<lb /><lb />Scientific, Commercial, Mathemat i<lb />Classical.
