Babcock, of the St. Lawrence State<lb />Hospital, to be a contagious disease.<lb />It even publishes a letter from Dr.<lb />Babcock, in which he describes ,in the<lb />most minute technical manner, how he<lb />drained the watery fluid from a_ spinal<lb />marrow of an acutely delirous maniac<lb />and. succeeded in strainingand isolating<lb />the germ of insanity. Furthermore, he<lb />claims to have positively identified this<lb />germ with that hitherto found in cases<lb />of croupous pneumonia and certain<lb />forms.of meningitis. By reinjection of<lb />the germ-laden fiuid he is said to have<lb />caused rabbits to become insane. All<lb />of which, on the mere face of it, is a<lb />sort of doubly tested demonstration of<lb />the truth. of the contagiousness of in-<lb />sanity.<lb /><lb />Dr. Babcock is so far convinced of<lb />the correctness of his theory that he in-<lb />Bonds to treat,the insane with drainage<lb />injections of the aseptic or. salt solu.<lb />tions which have power to destroy these<lb />germs or their toxines, supposed to<lb />press injuriously on the nerve centers<lb />of the brain or cortex.
