Mr. Bai-<lb />leyTs boast is that Texas congressional<lb />districts are as big as New England<lb />states. He is the subject of a story and<lb />it would be wrong to tell who is the<lb />author of it, as Mr. Bailey is a hot-<lb />blooded man. The story is that when<lb />Mr. Bailey first entered public life in<lb />Texas he was comparatively unknown,<lb />He was anxious to forge to the front,<lb />however, and to make himself heard on<lb />every occasion. A large meeting was<lb />to be held in a neighboring town. Bai-<lb />ley went toiton herseback. He fell in<lb />with a traveler, and in the course of con-<lb />versation about speakers, remarked:<lb />oDid you ever hear of Bailey? :The<lb />yokel replied that he had not. oWell,<lb /><lb />| said Bailey, ohe is a good speaker, and is<lb /><lb />going to be there to-day. If you geta<lb />chance, yell for him and you will geta<lb />speech worth listening to. The travel-<lb />er promised. The meeting came off, and<lb />several speakers were heard. Finally<lb />there was a Jull, and then some one in<lb />the audience began to yell: oB-a-i-l-e-y!<lb />B-a-i-l-e-y! The master of ceremonies<lb />turned to Bailey and led him to the<lb />rostrum. Bailey started to speak, But<lb />the shouter continued to yell oB-a-i-<lb />l-e-y! - Bailey stopped. The master of<lb />ceremonies said, genially: oIf our<lb />friend will keep still Mr. Bailey will<lb />continue his address. The gentleman<lb /><lb />, Speaking is Mr. Bailey. The only re-<lb /><lb />ply to this was a how] of disgust from<lb />the man who had been makivg all the<lb />noise, and he blurted out: oWhy, thatTs<lb />the long-haired galoot that told me to<lb />holler for Bailey!""N.
