June 17th, T96.<lb />On last evening at 8:30, the North<lb /><lb />Carolina Teachers Assembly ¢onvened<lb />in its 13h Annual Session in the hall<lb />of the Asheville Female College.<lb />When President Joyner called the As-<lb />sembly to order, the beautifui hall was<lb />filled to. itsT utmost capacity, the im"<lb />mense audience being unable to find<lb />standing room. This meeting: was only<lb />an introductory skirmish preparatory to<lb />the great battle of thought and action<lb />on to-morrow. ~Onthe rostrum, sat<lb />the offivers ~and speakers and a large<lb />number of prominent educators. The<lb />occasion was an auspicious and inspir-<lb />ing oneand pushing aside every sign of<lb />fear'and apprehension ts to the success<lb />of this session the whole assembly at<lb />once laid aside stiff formalities and<lb />leaped into the full fruition of hope and<lb />assurance.<lb /><lb />At the proper time and ina few well<lb />chosen remarks the president intro-<lb />duced Hon, Wm. M. Cocke, the young,<lb />talented~and eloquent Mayor of Ashe-<lb />ville. Mr. Cocke is a young man, just<lb />passed his majority, full of buoyancy,<lb />hope and strength, posessiag 4 strong<lb />intellectual face, with easy and grace-<lb />ful manners, a deep resonant voice, and<lb />a commanding appearance. As he<lb />stepped forward the audience greeted<lb />him with generous applause and for<lb />several minutes he repaid them with<lb />words of an eloquent welcome, that<lb />came forth with the flueney and ease of<lb />a flowing stream and captured the vast<lb />audience. After he finished and the<lb />applause had subsided the President.<lb />said, oWe have yet another treat in<lb />store for us. C., June 19th, 96.<lb />President ClevelandTs letter stating<lb />that he, oas an unflinching Democrat<lb />who has been honored by his party and<lb />who desires hereafter no greater politi-<lb /><lb />eal privilege than toT occupy the place<lb /><lb />of private in its ranks,� could not have<lb />been. surprising to readers of ~this corre-<lb />spondence, in which it was positively<lb />stated, by authority, many months ago<lb />tiat President Cleveland was not and<lb />would not be a candidate before the<lb /><lb />_ Chicago convertion, and that he would<lb /><lb />whenever he deemed such action desir-<lb />able write aletter to thai effect. What<lb />was stated then has now come to puss.<lb />That letter has been written. It was<lb />not surprising, either, in view of Mr.<lb />ClevelandTs consistent opposition to sil-<lb />ver, that he should have used that let-<lb />terto make a fresh attack upon the<lb />irze coinage of silver.<lb />decided<lb />zmocrats as to what, if any, effect the<lb />PresidentTs letter will have upon the<lb />~hicago convention, and only time will<lb />t2l] which are right.
