The matter was<lb />reported to the Postoffice department<lb />and detectives have been on the alert.<lb />Thorough investigation will always<lb />trace these thefts to the Durham post-<lb />office, and on this account suspicion<lb />rested upon the force in that office.<lb /><lb />Finally, Gregory and Dexter, two<lb />detectives, who had the matter in<lb />the rascal. A ce lored man named<lb />Dave Lane was employed at the facto-<lb />ry and it was his duty to deliver mail<lb />at the office and receive mail and take<lb />it to the factory. He did not handle<lb />all the mail, but only that sent to and<lb />from the coupon department. And<lb />the robberies were confined to the mails<lb />from this department. Some days ago<lb />one of the detectives went to Greens<lb />boro and mailed tv:o or three packages<lb />to the coupon department with money<lb />enclosed. They were bills and marked.<lb />He saw the packages put in the pouch<lb />at Greensboro, followed the pouch and<lb />saw it safely delivered to the mail<lb />agent, went in the mail car and saw the<lb />package unmolested putin the pouch<lb />for delivery to the Darham _ office.<lb />The man who carries the mail from<lb />the railroad statlon to the postoflice<lb />was closely shadowed. When the<lb />mail was taken to the office one of the<lb />detectives kept watch at the front door,<lb />the other at the rear. Dave Lane<lb />went in and got the mail, there being<lb />no one. in the office at the time but<lb />Mr. Jenkius, the delivery clerk. They do not look in<lb />the leust alike, nor does either resemble<lb />the distinguished father.<lb /><lb />The procerdings are before Justice<lb />Fursman, in the criminal branch of the<lb />Supreme Court, and they are like a<lb />| prosy civel trial in which there is a tan-<lb />gle of wall street affairs.<lb /><lb />Henry B. Beecher was the senior<lb />partner of Beeeher, Schenck &amp; Co.<lb /><lb />It was brought out that Beecher,<lb />Schenck &amp; Co. were the agents for the<lb />American Security and Casualty C om-<lb />pany, of Baltimore, of which W. E.<lb />Midgeley, ene of the partners of<lb />Beecher, Schenck &amp; Co., was president.<lb />Beecher, Schenck &amp; Co. were the gen-<lb />eral agents of the company and were to<lb />receive 35 per cent. of the premium.<lb /><lb />The specific act for which H. B-<lb />Beecher was indicted was forging the<lb />corporate name of F. B. Bond, vice-<lb />president of the Chicago, Milwaukee,<lb />and St. Paul railway. By means of<lb />clerks, bood-keepers and heads of de-<lb />partments it was shown that Mr Beech-<lb />erin 1893, had handed Manager<lb />Burke, of the railroal department two<lb />applications for policies purporting to<lb />be signed by Bond. One policy was<lb />for $500,000; the other for $250,000.and<lb />the amount of commission due Beecher,<lb />Schenck &amp; Co. on them would have<lb />been $222,000.<lb /><lb />This amount was carried through on<lb />the books and brought into the annual<lb />report. Mr. Weeks said that the Cas-<lb />ualty Company declared a5 per cent<lb />~dividend on the basis business, although<lb />the polices had never been made out.<lb /><lb />Vice-president Bond was placed upon<lb />the witness-stand yesterday. In Mr.<lb />DunnTs barn lot are a row of cow sta-<lb />bles, four in all. All were occupied<lb />when lightning struck the building<lb />last Saturday. Ihe cow in stall num<lb /><lb />cow in stall number three was killed,<lb />and the cow in stall number four was<lb />unhurt. The only explanation of this<lb />strange incideat is that the stalls are<lb />built at the fuot ofa targe tree. In<lb />the stables where the cows were killed<lb />the roots of the tree protrude, while in<lb />the other two stalls the roots are be-<lb />neath the surface.
