Up in the big telephone ex-<lb />change a dozen girls are told off for<lb />night duty. They are, like the tenor,<lb />fond of the songs of the day, but, unlike<lb />him, they are pot allowed to.sing; and<lb />they grow lonely after thecalls begin<lb />to be few and far between and the mur-<lb />mur of the street traffic below has<lb />ceased.<lb /><lb />Some months ago, it is related, one of<lb />the girls who had answered a call from<lb />the electrical works, overheard the<lb />watchman singing his favorite song.<lb />She listened as long as she could with-<lb />out arousing the ire of the unmusical<lb />individual at the other end of the line,<lb />and then confided her discovery to the<lb />rest of the girls. There was a short<lb />but eager council of war, and the girl<lb />who made the discovery was deputed<lb />to call up the harmonious watchman<lb />and ask him for asong. The watchman,<lb />who must be. quite a. phenomenon in<lb />that he is a tenor and also oan extreme-<lb />ly bashful young man, required _a lit-<lb />tle coaxing, but eventually complied<lb />with the request, All the other girls<lb />oeut in on the line, and the watchman<lb />was encored so often that his throat<lb />was sore when the.concert was finished.<lb /><lb />But this unique tenor is as fastidious<lb />as he is shy. It is said that there was<lb />only one girl at the ocentral who can<lb />induce him to sing, and she'¥s the maid-<lb />en who made the original long-distance-<lb />concert discovery. When the other girls<lb />begin to grow tired at night, she calls)<lb />up the electrical works, and the watch-?<lb />man sings for her, unconsefous of the<lb />fact that-all the girls have. ocut in on<lb />the line, and that he is.singing to the<lb />entire night-foree of the exchange. The<lb />others hint. that there fs a romance in<lb />it, but that is a matter which concerns<lb />only the young watchman and the girl<lb />at the ocentral.<lb /><lb />OUR PLAYING CARDS.<lb /><lb />- Arrow-Shapod Characters.<lb />o1 have it, exclaimed nn enthusiastic<lb />whistplayer who was engaged in a rub-<lb />ber ata Madison ayenue whist club, re-<lb />fates the New York Herald.<lb />oNo you haven't, answered his part-<lb />ner. oIt was trumped.<lb /><lb />acters on the cards,<lb />puzzled me.T Ihave studied the matter,<lb />read all that has been written on the<lb />subject and have never until this mo-<lb />ment been satisfied as to how the cards<lb />came to bear the shapes, we call hearts, |<lb />diamonds, einbs and spades.
