Through several-years of<lb />bad management the farm had passed<lb />under the tenant ~system 'by which the<lb />land..was cultivated, it had become very<lb />much impoverished and the yield was<lb />very poor. ~The time had been when<lb />F| there were plenty of splendid outhouses,<lb />barns, stables and tenement. houses, but<lb />these: were all dilapidated and the most<lb />of them absolutely worthless so fur as<lb />| comfort or convenience were concerned,<lb />The farm house, a handsome. structure<lb />when first built in ante-bellum times,<lb />had decayed and the wall around it was<lb />all rotten and gone. The ditch banks<lb />and hedge rows had grown up and here<lb />and there all over the farm were éro-<lb />sions of the scil and other evidences of<lb />thriftlessness and neglect. In this con-<lb />| dition as above stated about seven years<lb />ago he come into possession of this farm<lb />with an incumbrance ~npon it of over<lb />two thousand dollars. With no moneyT<lb />to make a start he was compelled to go<lb />in debt for team~and farming impleT<lb />| ments and utensils and by the time he<lb />was ready to ayy his first crop it can<lb />be readily h that heT was jin debt<lb />~thousand dollars, ~The<lb />finst-tivd ith he thade nothing ~to pay<lb />'/ upon his old debts, and so five years.ago<lb />he made'a new statt with a different de-<lb /><lb />ry<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />+ 4 24 & @ @ & 2%<lb /><lb />$4.<lb /><lb />Since that time he says | he has stayed<lb />jat home and attended to his own busi-<lb />ness. He farms entirely by ~thé tenant<lb />system but he has it understood in<lb />written contracts with his tenants that<lb />he is the business manager of the farm,<lb />Jand that each crop must-be cultivated<lb />and managed under his instructions and<lb />that they together work for each others<lb />mutual interests, .He says that he has<lb />no trouble with his. tenants and that<lb />{each recognizes that whatever is for one<lb />is for the other interests. He lives. ex.<lb /><lb />| cept upon business.<lb />| He lives within twenty minutes ride<lb /><lb />of a prosperous little village but. never<lb />spends his time loitering around discuss-<lb />jing politics, with the idle ones always<lb />El to be foun {around ~such places, keeps<lb />his owt books, matiiges his own busi-<lb />| ness and pushes his farming interests<lb />¢ degree of ~business jud;<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />~ go kt ware hdT engaged<lb /><lb />; in he mereantile or aay other trasinieys<lb /><lb />+ =<lb /><lb />: ure to spend ia. few; hours ou this farm,<lb />An entirely different ~spectacle is pre. |.<lb />& | sented now fromT the itapidated ~and |.<lb />meglected farm of five years ago.<lb /><lb />~a hedge ~rowsT havé vilard ~thowed down and<lb /><lb />o are in ei the" ~feted Toes | are fh ind be AY hii for. a while<lb />fer has been train | is Peed a thnk the is was vo<lb /><lb />~plished by Our Union ?".Rev. In other words he is<lb />so nearly out of debt that he has per-<lb />sonal property enough to pay all he<lb />owes. Now isnTt this a good record<lb />and one which the majority of the fur-<lb />mers of the county would do well to<lb /><lb />has right to feel proud and under ordi-<lb />nary circumstances he has a future full<lb />of promise. It is his plan of business<lb />managment that has done it.<lb /><lb />0. L. He<lb />contrasted it vividly with theT modesty<lb />which characterized the first king of Is-<lb />rael, who, when the time drew on for<lb />his coronation, was tound ohid among<lb />the stuff. Nathaniel Macon,T who in<lb />the history of the Old North State,<lb />measures up shoulder to shoulder<lb />with Zebulon B. Vance, had constantly<lb />to be urged to accept office, and was<lb />elected to the Senate of the. United<lb />States without his own knowledge.<lb />Thege words in an exchange fall under<lb />our eyes;, oIt was said, in 1856, of<lb />the committee who visitedT Wheatland<lb />to notify James Buchanau of his nomi-<lb />ination to the presidency, that: they<lb />found the ~old functionaryT in his gar-<lb />den hoeing his potatoes. .. There is no<lb />modern Cincinnatus, however, . nor<lb />need we expect to find the statesman of<lb />to-day ohid among the stuff.T And<lb />with the mad rush for preferment, the:<lb />feeling of responsibility to. the people,<lb />which so characterized the fathers of<lb />the republic, is disappearing, and our<lb />trusted servants..too often forget that<lb />opublic office is a public trust." Char-<lb />lotte Observer,<lb /><lb />"<lb /><lb />The latest freak ia the horse line is<lb />a pony with a tail sixteen feet long.<lb />This isa 16 to 1 pony,"W ilmington<lb />Star.<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />. Both were perfect-<lb />ly innocent in the matter, but enough<lb />iil-feeling was engendered to justify<lb />un international dispute. The Waldorf.<lb />has on the first floor a reception-room<lb />and parlor. This is utilized for all<lb />kinds of entertainments. One day an<lb />art sale is held there, the next a dis-<lb />play of fancy work, perhaps a musical<lb />the next, and so on. The other after-<lb />noon a musical programme was given<lb />in this reception room, and that was<lb />what caused all the trouble. The door<lb />leading to the room, which is usually<lb />vpen to all, was watched by an attend-<lb />ant who demanded cards. This aroused<lb />the curiosity of the inquisitive guest.<lb />yfe walked around the corridor eying<lb />the room from every possible point of<lb />vantage, and then walked up to the<lb />desk and said to the clerk, who was<lb />writing in ~a hage ledger:<lb /><lb />oWhat is going on in there?<lb /><lb />The clerk jabbed his pen in the ink-<lb />stand and replied tersely: oI guess it<lb />is a bird recital.<lb /><lb />Then he continued his writing with<lb />never a quiver of an eyelash, The in-<lb />quisitive guest contracted hiseyebrows,<lb />then he looked for a lurking gleam of<lb />umusement in the clerkTs eye, but<lb />found none. Then he turned and wan-<lb />dered into the cafe to think over the<lb />problem. After due deliberation he<lb />eaine to the conclusion that it was not<lb />ai all straight and he came back. He<lb />expected to see the clerk give some<lb />sign of amusement when he ap-<lb />proached the desk, but instead the man<lb />behind the onyx was immersed morc<lb />deeply than ever in the big book. The<lb />guest repeated his question, saying:<lb /><lb />oWhat did you say was going on in<lb />that room ?<lb /><lb />The clerk never raised his eyebrows,<lb />but muttered something about ofour<lb />and seven make eleven and" adding<lb />hurriedly:<lb /><lb />oT donTt know, but I ohind itTs a pate<lb />talk. : P<lb /><lb />The mysteryTwas déepentttty, and the<lb />inquisitive man saw no way out of the<lb />difficulty except to go and'see for him-<lb />self. He could detect nothing in the<lb />clerkTs manner that warranted him in<lb />believing that he was being made the<lb />butt of a joie. but he was confident that<lb />it was not all straight. So he walked<lb />up and purchased a ticket and went in-<lb />side, In a few moments he came out<lb />and he had a look of set determination<lb />upon his face, He walked up to the<lb />desk, and in a rough voice he ed<lb />ananded;<lb /><lb />oWhat did yousay was going on in<lb />chat room?<lb /><lb />The clerk was startled at the gruff<lb />tone and looked up from his book.
