Hines & Hamilton.<lb /><lb />| Everything was swept so clean that<lb />there isno prospect of the mill being|<lb /><lb />rebuilt, in fact Mr. Hines told us Mon-<lb />~day evening that all they had was lost<lb />and they had nothingto rebuild - with.<lb />This isasad calamity unfortunate to<lb />the town as well as these gentlemen.<lb /><lb />The truth of the, situation is that<lb />this total destruction of the mill is<lb />really a more serious blow toT Green-<lb />ville than the big fire on February 16th<lb />shat. destroyed so many of our business<lb />houses. The aggregate loss then was<lb />far more than now, but it was so di-<lb /><lb />Avided that the losses did not, fall so<lb />~ heavily onindividuals, and as soon as<lb /><lb />insurance adjustments were made re-<lb />building started, at once. But in this<lb />instance the loss falls uport a single<lb />enterprise, and so cripples it that it can-<lb />not rebuild unaided.<lb /><lb />An important question that should<lb />be considered is can Greenville afford<lb />for the mill not to be rebuiltT? Again,<lb />canTt the business men of the town<lb />hold out~such inducements to these gen-<lb /><lb />t tlemen as will enable them to rebuild<lb /><lb />their plant. Think for a moment what<lb />advantage this. mill has been to the<lb />town. By its destruction 65 men are<lb />thrown out of employment, and these<lb />represented @ weekly pay dll of be<lb />tween $300. dnd - $400, A * large |<lb />number of the employes were menT of<lb />families, and if the mill is not rebuilt<lb /><lb />Ri they will have to go elsewhere to find<lb />& | employment.<lb /><lb />And this is not all. Greenville has<lb /><lb />been dependent largely. upon this millT<lb />;|for supplies of ~lumber to keep its build-<lb /><lb />ing operations in progress. With this<lb />source of supply cut off it is easy to see<lb />that the advancement of the town in<lb />the way of new building will be retarded.<lb />So it is greatly to the interest of Green-<lb />ville to take'such steps ~a8° will secure<lb />It necessary<lb />let a public meeting be held looking to<lb />this end.<lb /><lb />A sidke For ger<lb />_ Sometime ago # negro yin Alfred<lb />Hilliard was placed in jail for assaulting<lb />an officer. ~The negro had some money<lb />"$14"which he was afraid to take in<lb />jail with him, and sent, it to Mr. O<lb /><lb />| Hooker to. take eure | of for him. One may have<lb />dress skirts made with lighter material<lb />for linings and with less bulky and<lb />cumbersome fittings than heretofore,<lb />provided a suitable petticoat is secured.<lb />There are firm and reliable makes of<lb />haircloth that stand out. under the<lb />weight of all skirts of ordinary fabric.<lb />With skirts made on this plan, one<lb />well-made petticoat serves for the en-<lb />tire outfit for street costumes. These<lb />may be in gray or black haircloth, and<lb />should be fitted with the utmost nice-<lb />ty. For evening dresses a white hair-<lb />cloth one answers the same purpose.<lb />Silk petticoats are in very general use,<lb />although many ladies who have worn<lb />them for years are making vp fine,<lb />firm qualities of moreen, and like them<lb />very much better. There is a certain<lb />springiness to the moreen petticoat<lb />that one does not find in silk, which,<lb />unless very carefully cut, is likely. to<lb />wind around oneTs ankles and make<lb />walking a weariness rather than a<lb />pleasure.<lb /><lb />As to white petticoats, the variety<lb /><lb />are simply bewildering. Théy remind |<lb />one of the old-fashioned christening<lb />dress of an infant, such masses of<lb />tucks, puffs, ruffles, lace and embroitl-<lb />ery are they. There is a fancy among<lb />exceedingly dainty<lb />women for making petticoats of fine<lb />nainsook and finishing them with e<lb />single wide hem-stitched hem. An-<lb />other favorite model is made on the<lb />Spanish flounce idea. Half of the<lb />length of the skirt is gored, the re-<lb />waining portion being set on of<lb />straight breadths. This may have a<lb />hem-stitched hem or a plain one with<lb />a narpow floupce of lace. In. all cases<lb />the hem should: be the ful]. width of<lb />the flounce, as it is much more desir-<lb />able if the flounce is sewed through<lb />more than one thickness of the fabric.<lb /><lb />While the chemise is a part of ali<lb />well-kept underwear stocks, the knit-<lb />ted. vest, either in gossamer, silk or<lb />wool, is much more generally worn,<lb />It absorbs the perspiration, in summer,<lb />fits the figure without wrinkles and ir<lb />by many thonght ~to allow of a muyeh<lb />better fit of the dhress waist. At all<lb />events, it has beeame a standard arti-<lb />cle of wear, and 3s so tauch approved<lb />that there must ~be a good reason for<lb />its continuance. "The gossamer vest is<lb />also worn as a corset cover, and is by<lb />many preferred to those made of mus-<lb />lin except for dressy wear. Tir bicycle<lb />has had much tto do with modifying<lb />certain artieles wf apparel. The corset<lb />waist and the hygienic waist have be-<lb />come so. Ampontant. for, wheelwomen<lb />that it is fondly: hoped .that much bet-<lb />ter shapes willoe furnished than here-<lb />totore.
