This un-<lb />doubtedly comes to us through the<lb /><lb />| Latin from the Greek orodon, a word<lb /><lb />which is now agreed to be, in the wider<lb />sénse, oriental, not Greek. But.to which<lb />of the two great families of language it<lb />belongs is less certain, Heyn main-<lb />tains it to be Iranian"that is, of the<lb />Aryan family"of the older tongue of<lb />Pcrsia and Bactria; and Persia might<lb />unquestionably put strong claims to be<lb />the true native country of the rose.<lb />But Prof. Skeat, who has the majority<lb />of modern authorities on his side, de-<lb />clares it to be a pure Semitic word"the<lb />Arabic oward, a flowering shrub, thus<lb />denoting the flower of flowers par ex-<lb />cellence. It is worth noticing that the<lb />Persian word ogul similarly meant at.<lb />first only a perfumed flower, but has<lb />come to be used of the rose alone. oUt<lb />rosa flos florum sic est domnits ista<lb />domorum is the emphatic way in<lb />which the inscription ever the lovely<lb />chapter-house at York claims itas being<lb />the very flower of architecture.<lb /><lb />But theories, however, of the name<lb />agree with all other indications that we<lb /><lb />of the rose, much as that of our earliest<lb />forefathers, in the central or western<lb />central distriet.of Asia; but, instead of<lb />spreading only in a westerly direction,<lb />the rose took, apparently, a more<lb />catholic view of the earth, and ex:<lb />panded impartially east and west, with-<lb />out showing any reluctance about longi-<lb />tude, while disliking the more violent<lb />changes of temperature implied by an<lb />extension of latitude. It has been<lb />found by travelers as far south as<lb />Abyssinia in one hemisphere and Mex-<lb />ico in the other; but it. never seems,<lb />voluntarily, to come very near to the<lb />equator. Northward, however, noth-<lb />ing seems to stop it, since it has con-<lb />quered Iceland, Greenland and Kamt-<lb />chatka. .<lb /><lb />oIn Iceland, so (in)fertile in vegeta-<lb />tion that in some parts the natives are<lb />compelled to feed their horses, sheep<lb />and oxen on dried fish, we find the rosa<lb />rubiginosa, with its pale, solitary, cup-<lb />shaped flowers; and in Lapland, bloom-<lb />ing almost under the snows of that<lb />severe climate, the natives seeking<lb />mosses and lichens for their reindeer<lb />find the roses maialis and rubella, the<lb /><lb />of a sweet perfume, enlivens the dreari-<lb /><lb />ness of Norway, Denmark and Sweden.<lb />"Quarterly Review.<lb /><lb />AN) MURE GOLD WEATHER,<lb /><lb />Ice in any quantity, and will keep<lb />well supplied throvghout the<lb />summer.
