Cool nights<lb />the first. few days of the week brought<lb />the mean temperature slightly below<lb />the normal, but the last five days were<lb />warm, bringing the average for the<lb />week about tour degrees per day above<lb />the normal. Fine seasons occurred near-<lb />ly everywhere on May Ist and 2d, the<lb />largest amounts exceeding an inch along<lb />the central portion of the State. The<lb />general prospects are now very favora-<lb />ble indeed, and farmers are working in<lb />good spirits.<lb /><lb />EASTERN District.<lb /><lb />Reports are nearly all quite favorable<lb />for this District ; very few places did not<lb />share in the beneficial showers of May<lb />[st and 2d, and the conditions have been<lb />fine, both for farm work and for grow-<lb />ing crops. Cotton-planting continues,<lb />but approaching completion ; much has<lb />come up with promising stand and looks<lb />vigorous; some being chopped. Corn<lb /><lb />stand tair, with fine green color and<lb />growing rapidly ; but little was prevent-<lb />ed from coming up by previous drought ;<lb />some little damage by cut-worms re-<lb />ported. Setting out tcbacco plants pro-<lb />gressing, and planting pea-nuts will be<lb />general during next two weeks. Gar-<lb />der.s, wheat and oats have improved ;<lb /><lb />Irish potatoes look fresh and promis-<lb />ing; sweet potatoes have. sprouted<lb />nicely and a few have been set out.<lb />Large shipments of berries and peas to<lb />the North.<lb /><lb />CenzRAL District.<lb /><lb />Quite heavy rains occurred in a few<lb />central counties, washing lands to sume<lb />extent ; in others the weather continues<lb />too dry. Planting late corn~is going on<lb />vigorously ; corn is quite large for the<lb />season. Cotton has not come up quite<lb />as well as hoped for, but the good sea-<lb />sons at the end of the week will improve<lb />the stand. Wheat looks well but is<lb />heading low ; spring oats bave improved;<lb />rye has rusted some. Sweet potatoes<lb />have sprouted well. Transplanting to-<lb />bacco vommenced to be pushed in a few<lb />counties the last of the week, which in-<lb />dicates advanced growth of plants.<lb />Many reports still received of damage<lb />ay potato-bugs, bud and cut-worms in<lb />corn and insects on tobacco, but the<lb />rainy weather will diminish these<lb /><lb />pests.<lb />Western District.<lb /><lb />| Showers which occurred throughout<lb />the District on the last three days of the<lb /><lb />came in time to prevent any serious<lb />damage which had been threatened by<lb />drought. There seems to have been<lb /><lb />er, but everything was greatly benefited<lb />by rains Coftonis. up with good stand<lb />ingen ince but many: farmers have<lb />0 fin'shed planting cotton.
