Accordingly, at Mrs, Sur-<lb />rattTs Booth assembled his assistants,<lb />John H. Surratt, Payne, Atzerodt, Her-<lb />cid,OT Laughlin and Arnold, all mounted<lb />for the kidnaping.<lb /><lb />Between two and three oTclock in the<lb />| afternoon they left the house and made<lb />for the Seventh street road, where it<lb />was reported that the president would<lb />pass that evening on his way to the<lb />Seventh street hospital.<lb /><lb />Mr. Lincoln would frequently ride out<lb />to the soldiersT home on the Seventh<lb />street road, entirely unguarded, or, if<lb />in a carriage, with only a driver, much<lb />against the protestations of his friends,<lb />who were fearful for his safety. The<lb />coach of the president was to be seized<lb />in a secluded spot on the road near the<lb />city, and Surratt was to jump on the<lb />box (as he was more familiar with the<lb />roads) and to make for oT. B., a col-<lb />lection of two or three houses and<lb />stores on the ounderground route,<lb />about 22 miles southeast of Washing-<lb />ton, and thence to the Potomac. The<lb />carriage was to be abandoned as soon<lb />as the city limits were passed. Relays<lb />~of fast horses were in readiness, and<lb />the boatT at Port Tobbaco was<lb /><lb />prepared to cross the river.<lb /><lb />As the distance from Washington to<lb />Port Tobacco creek was about 40 miles,<lb />the intention was to make the entire<lb />trip the first night, and, crossing the<lb />liver, to be within the lines of the con-<lb />federacy at the expiration of 24 hours,<lb /><lb />The plan was not so ridiculously ab-<lb />surd as at first glance it appears. It<lb />was not a difficult matter at that time<lb />io pass the pickets stationed at the<lb />navy yard bridge, and once in the<lb />country, where friends were willing,<lb />fresh horses ready, and federal sol-<lb />diers few, the chances of reaching the<lb />Potomac in safety were not unfavor-<lb />able. .<lb /><lb />The plot failed because Mr. Lincoln<lb />did not go out on the Seventh street<lb />road on the afternoon expected, Scere-<lb />tary Chase going in his stead. Booth<lb />and his companions returned to Mrs.<lb />SurrattTs disappointed, disgusted and<lb />enraged. Such a favorable opportuni-<lb />ty would not likely occur again, and<lb />the conspirators disbanded. ENT Tr JEWELRY,<lb /><lb />Than Their Descendants.<lb /><lb />Among the richest of recent archaeo-<lb />logical discoveries are those afforded by<lb />the opening of the two brick pyramids<lb />at Dashur on the Nile, the most south-<lb />erly of the great chain of Memphian<lb />pyramids, and of some of the encient<lb />tombs surrounding them. The _ ex-<lb />plorers found that the tombs had long<lb />ago been plundered of most of the gold<lb />and jewels buried with the royal per-<lb />sonages for whom they were construct-<lb />ed. Fortunatety, however, some. of<lb />those precious relics had escaped the<lb />plunderers, being carefully concealed<lb />in the tombs 0; some princesees situ-<lb />ated on the north side of one of the<lb /><lb />pyramids.<lb /><lb />Here were unearthed three splendid<lb />breast ornaments, beautifully worked<lb />in gold, set with cornelian, lapis lazuli<lb />and turquoise, and covered with human<lb />figures and the curious insignia em-<lb />ployed by the ancient Egyptians.<lb /><lb />Nothing, perhaps, gives a greater in-T<lb />terest to these specimens of jewelry<lb />than the fact that they are far more<lb />beautiful and artistic in their work-<lb />manship than similar objects made by<lb />the Egyptians at a much lafer time.<lb />Although they are not less than 5,000<lb />years old, these Dashur jewels are set<lb /><lb />~and finished in a manner that excites<lb /><lb />the admiration of our 19th century<lb />experts.<lb /><lb />Not less wonderful as a specimen of<lb />the artistic skill of the men who con-<lb />structed the pyramids is a statue repre-<lb />senting the king, Ra-Fou-Ab, at the<lb />age of about 16 years, which was found<lb />in a chamber near the sarcophagus<lb />containing his mummified body. -The<lb />statue is carved out of a hard, almost<lb />black wood, with great attention to<lb />detail, every muscle being carefully<lb />wrought, so that anatomical experts<lb />have pronounced it a remarkably cor-<lb />rect representation of the human fig-<lb />ure,<lb /><lb />It is believed that many other not<lb />less interesting discoveries remain to<lb />be made among the tombs of Dashur."<lb /><lb />7)<lb /><lb />A Juvenile Dingnosié.<lb /><lb />Children are, after all, your true<lb />impressionists, with undimmed per-<lb />spicacity in taking original views of<lb />things.
