X. when<lb />he says the business men and ladies of a<lb />community are responsible for young<lb />men drinking, but Ido not think the<lb />business men areas much responsible<lb />as the ladies. I have often heard young<lb />men.say that a young man who drank<lb />was thought as much of by the ladies<lb />asone who did not drink; and the ac-<lb />tions of a great many young ladies<lb />proves that their assertion is true. I<lb />do not intend to go for the ladies too<lb />heavily, but those that the cap fits must<lb />wear it. I have attended a great many<lb />dances nnd amusements ot vatious kinds,<lb />and I have seen young ladies eorner off<lb />young men under the influence of whis-<lb />key in preference to those that were<lb />sober. Of course sober young men no<lb />tice such things and I certainly would<lb />like to know what kind of encourage-<lb />ment that is to young men who do not<lb />drink... They see that those around<lb />them who drink seem to be preferred to<lb />Soon the two meet at an-<lb />other dance and the drinking young<lb />man says to the other, ocome, letTs have<lb />a drink. "The sober young man js_in-<lb />sisted upon to take something. He<lb />pauses a few seconds, and:thinks of the<lb /><lb />| dance} before, what a \pleasant time<lb /><lb />hig fiend had, and he at once makes up<lb />his mind to follow his friends suey.<lb />So it comes, oI donTt care, setTem up.T<lb /><lb />| If the young lady is not responsible for<lb /><lb />that young man taking that drink, I<lb />would like to know who is.<lb /><lb />Suppose we reyerse the thing and<lb />find the young man in the ball room<lb />under the influence of whiskey and his<lb /><lb />| lady friends not even treating him with<lb /><lb />ordinary politeness, then the sober<lb />young men would see that the ladies<lb />preferred. soberness to drunkenness,<lb />and it would: be encouraging them not<lb />to drink.<lb /><lb />I often hear young ladies say ooh !<lb />I weuld not marrya man that drinks<lb />for anything in the world. Now let<lb /><lb />me'tell you; my young lady friends,<lb /><lb />doesnTt, and if the sun were to sudden-<lb />ly rise over your town some night<lb />about twelve orone-eTclock you all, and<lb />brother oM. X too, would think that<lb />every town in our country had been on<lb />fire. Now let me: tell you something<lb />else my lady friends, you all had better<lb />use your influence and stop this drink-<lb />lug among young men, if you donTt<lb /><lb />us all. You say you will not. marry a<lb /><lb />man that drinks. If you will not, this<lb />country will be overstocked with old<lb />maids in a very few years.<lb /><lb />I was very much surprised a few<lb />days ago at a young ladv asking . the<lb />question, owhich is the most injurious,<lb />whiskey or tobacco? I thought that<lb />whiskey had caused enough trouble in<lb />almost every household for ev ery man,<lb />woman and child to know that it is the<lb />greatest evil on earth. Look at the<lb />various crimes that are daily commit-<lb />ted. Whiskey is the cause of mine-<lb />tenths of them ; and this being cam-<lb />paign year we know that whiskey will<lb />be freely drank, and we may expect an<lb />increase of crime. Young ladies, you<lb />all have @ friend who drinks, and you<lb />have some influence over that friend.<lb />Why not try tostop him by kindness,<lb /><lb />much influence you have over your<lb />young men friends, and your influence<lb /><lb />sisters many years of sorrow.<lb /><lb />We have before us political parties<lb />that claim to be working for the interest<lb />of all, but there is only one party who<lb />has the real interest of the peuple at<lb /><lb />the cradle and would add happiness. to<lb />thousands of homes, but we need not<lb />look for assistance from the political<lb />parties. They areall sailing on the<lb />same boat and at the end of their jour-<lb />ney they all drink at the same saloon. I<lb />am sure. that somebody will say<lb />oOh! thatTs some fellow who wants<lb />prohibition. ~ThatTs correct, that. is<lb />exactly what I want, and I am_ not<lb />alone, and I have the great pleasure of<lb />knowing that the majority of the ladies<lb />»|and the better class of our people are<lb />all with me, and if the ladies would use<lb />their influence towards helping the<lb />christian people reform the young men<lb />and letthem see their error, they too<lb />would szon be prohibitinists. I was read-<lb />ing a few days ago an account of a, lot<lb />of drunken Indians at Juquela, Mexico,<lb />killing many ladies and children.<lb />Whiskey was the cause of those lives<lb />being lost. We have notthe Indians<lb />among us, but we have the whiskey on<lb />every side, and with the increase of<lb />drinking and the increase of crime, er<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />~|many years the Mcxicans will be read-|<lb /><lb />ing just such accounts right here among<lb />us.
