The temperature was con-<lb />siderably helow the normal, the mean<lb />for the State for the week being about<lb />25 degrees, and indicating a deficiency<lb />cf nearly three degrees. The week<lb />was very dry, less than a third of the<lb />average precipitation occurred. The<lb />amount of sunshine was above the<lb />normal. A warm, gentle rain is much<lb />needed to cause the germination of<lb />seeds.<lb />Eastern Dirtict."The weather<lb />this week has not been favorable for the<lb />growth of crops, and very little im-<lb />provement in vegetation is reported.<lb />The temperature was too low, the min-<lb />imum falling to nearly the freezing point<lb />on the 8th. Several frosts, especi-<lb />ally Sunday morning, the oth, damaged<lb />uncovered strawberries considerably,<lb />and truck and young corn slightly, and<lb />thinned out young tobacco plants.<lb />Very few correspondents in this district<lb />think that the fruit crop is seriously<lb />damaged, as the winds were too brisk.<lb />The rainfall for the week averaged less<lb />than a quarter of an inch and occurred<lb />mostly on the 9th, mixed with some<lb />sleet. Planting corn has been pushed<lb />rapidly and early planting is coming up<lb />fairly well. Large areas of cotton land<lb />have been fertilized: and thoroughly<lb />prepared and a little cotton-planting<lb />lasT been done. Irish potatoes are com-<lb />ing upTtticely.
