Mr.<lb />Htunt (oAn Account of the Priory of<lb />St. Peter and St. Paul at Bath) gives<lb />us a remarkable illustration ef this_<lb />~eHowship in the bond of prayer made<lb />between the priory of Bath and six<lb />other Benedictine cotivents, as far back<lb />as A, D. 1077, in which the parties<lb />agréed te pray far ofie anothér and their<lb />brethren, and,to be loyal to the king<lb />and queen with one heart and one soul.<lb />oIt will be observed, adds' Mr. Hunt,<lb />othat'two of theabbots were of the con-<lb />quering race, and their ~union with<lb />thei, English brethren is pleasant to<lb />contem plate. <lb /><lb />When a monk died a messenger was<lb />dispatched to all the: religious commu-<lb />nities from which prayérs were due.<lb />and: indeed to many others, with the<lb />mortuary roll, having at the head an<lb />announcement of the death and a short<lb />a¢eount of the deceased. © Each commu-<lb />uity oacknowledged the receipt. of the<lb />rell-by writing upon itea promise of<lb />prayer for the soul of the departed,<lb />and, as a rule, a request for similar<lb />prayers for their deceased brethren and<lb />benefactors was~added. The benefits<lb /><lb />of these prayers seem to have beenT<lb /><lb />granted to a large number of, benefac-<lb />tors and others, Nor was this priv-<lb /><lb />a nermal payment, such as 4 pound of<lb />wax, Seems to have qualified a man or<lb />woman to receive it, if otherwise fit-<lb />ting, into the number of ofratresT or<lb />osoroves of the convent. Those so ad-<lb />mitted knew that the Divine sacrifice<lb />was daily offered for them in the<lb />church of the monastery, and that<lb />prayer was continually made for them<lb />while they lived, and that after death<lb />the welfare of their souls would be the<lb />subject of special intercession."Quar-<lb />terly Review.<lb /><lb />ROLLED C CAKES.<lb /><lb />Easily Prepare If You You Only Knaow How<lb /><lb />. to Proceed.<lb /><lb />Thete are. several species of rolled<lb />cakes which require special treatment.<lb />The best known of these are the rolled<lb />sponge cakes, which are~usually spread<lb />with jelly, custard, soft chocolate or<lb />some fillings rolled up while warm,<lb />and when cooled cut off in slices from<lb />the end.
