Moye, the efficient<lb /><lb />| Clerk of the Court, could serve every<lb /><lb />man in the county for one day in pro-<lb />portion to the service he rendered. Mr.<lb />W. L. Butts, on Tuesday, there would<lb /><lb />|be no talk on the street corners and at<lb />| the cross roads of free silver and hard<lb /><lb />times. Sentence was being passed on<lb />Mr. Butts for assault and battery, and<lb />the judgment of the Court was a. fine:<lb />of $15 and costs, Mr. Butts hurriedly<lb />whispered to Mr. Moye and asked the<lb />Court to hear him on_ the question of<lb />his character. Mr. Moye was heard,<lb /><lb />land after telling the Court he had<lb /><lb />known the defendant 25 years, and<lb />that he was a good natured man when<lb />sober, that he had not drank any in.<lb />over two years and was trying to keep<lb />himself'a sober man, the Judge kindly<lb />look off the fine. ~This occupied just<lb />about one minute, and Mr. Butts made<lb />$15 by the kind office of Mr. Moye,<lb />Could that much be made for one day<lb />of ten hours by every person in the<lb />county"there being 29,000 according<lb />to the census ot 1890"the sum would<lb />be $9,000 a day tor each inhabitant, or<lb />a total of $261,000,000. This shows<lb />the worth of good character, and trying<lb /><lb />to let whiskey alone. Drinking men}<lb /><lb />who are liable to fight should think of<lb />this and keep sober. Mr. Butts was<lb />once a drinking man but retormed two<lb />years ago and is still keeping the faith,<lb />and it -paid him $15 in one minute<lb />Tuesday.<lb /><lb />Lould Pitt county have the able and<lb />learned Judge Boykin to preside at a<lb />few more courts the dockets weuld be<lb />cleaned up.
