It<lb />contains, all told, perhaps eight or ten<lb />| Square miles of ground. This at the<lb />- outside World yield 600 or 700full claims.<lb />On these there would be a possibility,<lb />I do not say a probability, of finding<lb />veins rich enough to bear the cost of<lb />working. There are in the district, so<lb />far, some 12,000 located claims. You<lb />may judge of the probable value of the<lb />most of them.<lb /><lb />Of these 12,000 claims of course the<lb />many are merely fractional. About<lb />| 1,300 are patented, and have title estab-<lb /><lb />The next session of this School will<lb />begin on<lb /><lb />MONDAY SEPT. 2. 806,<lb /><lb />and centinue for ten months.<lb /><lb />The course embraces all the branches<lb />usually taught in an Academy.<lb /><lb />Terms, both for tuition and beard<lb />reasonable.<lb /><lb />Boys well fitted and equipped for<lb />business, by taking the academic<lb />course alone. In other words, there are 10,000<lb />odd claims in the district that so far<lb />as developed are practically worth<lb />nothing at all.<lb /><lb />To put the matter in another way,<lb />upwards of 900 companies have been<lb />organized thus far to operate in the dis-<lb />trict, and dozens more xre being put<lb />in the field each week. Of these 900 or<lb />more companies about six per cent., of<lb />50 or 60 in all, own producing mines.<lb />And of the latter but 12 of 15 are divi-<lb />| dend-payers. .<lb /><lb />Of course, in the clever and seductive<lb />circulars which the countless mining<lb />brokers scatter broadcast, you will read<lb />) of this or that company which will be<lb />a dividend-payer the very next week,<lb />or the very next month, or something<lb />like that, and whose stock may be<lb />bought now for a song, and later be<lb />worth par. And they point to numer-<lb />ous instances"to such splendid mines<lb />as the Portland, for example. Just a<lb />_year ago stock in the Portland was sell-<lb />ing at 40 cents, and now it is some-<lb />where around 200, and paying a divi-<lb />dend of 12 per cent. on its value. There<lb />are a number of such instances as this,<lb />so that it is slight wonder that people<lb />should lose their senses and invest in<lb />all sorts of worthless and owild-cat<lb />schemes that are thrown on the<lb />market. But if. you will reeall to mind<lb />that the gold kings of California did<lb />not make their money mining in the<lb />hills, but by manipulation on the stock<lb />exchanges, you may perhaps conclude<lb />to keep your money in a safe place. I<lb />do not mean that all of the stocks of-<lb />fered on the exchanges of Colorado are<lb />worthless, but I do mean to say that<lb />most of the companies that are-being<lb />floated or offered in the east are the<lb />sort that have no standing, or will<lb />bring in Colorado nothing like the price<lb />asked for them east. It is @ fact that<lb />more money is always spent on the<lb />claims next adjoining a bonanza mine<lb />than -is ever taken out of the mine it-<lb />self. ;<lb /><lb />W.H.
