At Davidson Col-<lb />lege, twenty miles from Charlotte,<lb />Professor Henry Louis Smith, of the<lb />Chair of- Physics, demonstrated to his<lb />classes the utility of the cathode rays.<lb />A bullet was fired into the hand -of a<lb />dead negro in the dissecting-room of<lb />the medical department. The photo-<lb />graph discovered the bullet, the X-ray<lb />penetrating not only the flesh, but the<lb />bone, and showing the ball hidden be-<lb />hind the bone in the middle finger.<lb /><lb />The bullet from a 22-calibre pistol<lb />went obliquely into the palm of the<lb />hand near the wrist. The bullet lodged<lb />under ~the central boneT of ~the palm.<lb /><lb />the purpose of showing tlie location * of<lb />the bullet and the bony articulation of<lb />the,hand. ~The flesh in the photo-<lb />graph appears as a faint, shadowy en-<lb />vélope burdering the finger-bones, and<lb />connecting the bones of the palm, ex-<lb />cept very near the wrist where the<lb />pulm-bones become larger and fill al-<lb />most the whole space. Looked at from<lb />the point of origin of the cathode rays,<lb />the bullet, an oblong slug, was exactly<lb />behind the bone ; yet the rays traversed<lb />flesh and bone, and gave the exact posi-<lb />tion of the ball, as well as its shape<lb />and size. The Lones ave much more<lb />clearly defined than in the Yale and<lb />Columbia, and most» other, American<lb />photographs, whieh have appeared in<lb />the scientific journals but uot so dis-<lb />tinct as Professor RoentgenTs.<lb />Coius in a purse, a bullet. buried in<lb /><lb />a cubie inch of fat meat, and. bird-shot<lb />wrapped i in many thicknesses of heavy<lb />paper, were photographed with perfect<lb />distinctness.<lb /><lb />Christiahity Wul Do It.<lb /><lb />According to the statement. of the<lb />president of the National Prison Con-<lb />gress of the U nited States, erime ~is in<lb />~ereasing out of all proportion +o the<lb />population.
