The rise in the<lb />price has stimulated the increase in ac-<lb />reage. There has been a greater de-<lb />mand for fertilizers, and the prices of<lb />mules and horses have gone up by rea-<lb />son of the demand for them on cotton<lb />plantations.<lb /><lb />This paper is no authority on farm-<lb />ing, but it believes that no farmer will<lb />be wise to quit raising his supplies to<lb />plant more cotton. The experience of<lb />the most uniformly successful farmers<lb />has becn that home supplies ought toT<lb />be made, and that then as much land<lb />ought to be put in money crops, diver.<lb />sified, as can be profitably grown.<lb /><lb />A big cotton crop this year means<lb />another 5 cent crop. A crop short like<lb />that of 1895, means in the neighbor-<lb />hood of 8 cents. _Those farmers who<lb />are planning for a big increase on the<lb />strength of the higher price will find<lb />they have made a big mistake if their<lb />example is generally followed through-<lb />out the South. A dog is very much of<lb />a piece. He isa good dog or a bad<lb />dog, brave or cowardly, honest or a<lb />sneak. The canine, intelligence is<lb />much higher than the feline, but the<lb />disposition is simpler.<lb /><lb />Cats are exceedingly irritable by<lb />temperament, sensitive to changes<lb /><lb />They are excitable and naturally<lb />disposed to bite and: scratch when<lb />at play. There is a curious tendency<lb />in them, as in ill balanced or over-<lb /><lb />heads when in high spirits, ar the<lb />self command most of them show<lb />when full grown in resisting these<lb />impulses is a striking proof of con-<lb />scious responsibility. A full grown<lb />pet cat scarcely ever scratches a<lb />young child, no matter how much<lb />mauled by it. Besides being irrita-<lb />ble they are moody and subject to<lb />depression, probably a physical re-<lb />action from the former condition.<lb />Princess, though not a sullen cat,<lb />would sometimes forsake the hearth<lb />or veranda and pass days by herself<lb />on a garden wall or under a bush,<lb />not ill or out of temper, but out of<lb />spirits, morbid and wishing for soli-<lb />tude instead of thesympathy which<lb />she always sought in her real ail-<lb />ments and bereavements. ~<lb /><lb />Her peculiarities, both of race and<lb />individuality, were remarkably de-<lb />fined, even when she held them in<lb />restraint; but, with one exception,<lb />all the cats I have known are cap-<lb />tious. Their instinct when ill or sad<lb />is to be alone, but this is entirely<lb />neutralized by petting. They be-<lb />come as dependent on caresses and<lb />sympathy as children and much<lb />wiser than children when they are<lb />ill or injured, as they apply for re-<lb />lief with the most unmistakable<lb />suggestions, sometimes indicatinn<lb />~plainly whore they aro in pam and<lb />prosonting thesufferinT mew ber for<lb />treatment.
