The way she roasted him<lb />was highly entertaining, if not edify-<lb />ing. Rev. Mr. Parish attempted to call<lb />her down, but she insisted upon having<lb />her say out. Unable to control her, he<lb />sought to overcome her harangue with<lb />i song, and so gave out a hymn. For<lb />awhile the sisterTs voice could be heard<lb />above the united tones of the congrega-<lb />tion. She continued to tals against the<lb /><lb />way under the strain and she fell ex-<lb />hausted in the seat.<lb /><lb />Here is the way she began her ex-<lb />perience recital:<lb /><lb />oI praise de Lawd dat he has ~lowed<lb />me to lib to see dis day. The natural waist of the<lb />woman of average height is about 28<lb />inches, and any less size is attained<lb />only through arrested development, or<lb />compression of means of whalebone and<lb />steel. The amount of room inside these<lb />28 inches is absolutely needed for the<lb />proper working of the machinery of<lb />the internal economy, In spite of this<lb />fact girls very often bind the yielding<lb />ribs into such narrow compass that the<lb />waist measures 20 or 22 inches only,<lb />and you will now and then hear some<lb />mother of a family, with a very differ-<lb />ent waist now, boast as if it were some-<lb />thing to be proud of that when she was<lb />19 her waist measure was 19 too, It is,<lb />however, of no use to talk to young peo-<lb />ple about the injurious effect of com-<lb />pression on stomach, heart, lungs, liver<lb />and the arterial system. They are not<lb />anatomists, and they do not.compre-<lb />hend the matter nor want to do so;<lb />they obscive that they feel as well now<lb /><lb />as they did before, and without weigh-.<lb /><lb />ing the thought that it requires time<lb />to work ruin, take it for granted that<lb />they always will feel as well, although<lb />they. have been told and taught that in<lb />post-mortem examinations it has been<lb />found that wherever tight lacing has<lb />been the rule, every organ was out of<lb />place.and seriously injured. But al-<lb />though it does move them a trifle to be<lb /><lb />told that red noses and eruptive skins | fF<lb /><lb />and flat chests are to be laid to the ac-<lb />ocount of the too slender waist, yet on<lb />the whole neither ~common-sense nor<lb />auld-wife wisdom nor doctors have the<lb />power of conviction that fashion does,<lb />and when fashion says that there is no<lb />beauty in a waspTs waist, but that.the<lb />lines of nobility and health made by<lb />deep breathing are the really lovely<lb />linés, fragility being something rather<lb />to be feared than loved, why then<lb />fragility begins to be avoided, and the<lb />linés of the Venus de Milo, of the Diana,<lb />of the-Pallas, begin to come in.<lb /><lb />The habit of tight lacing has already<lb />done almost irretrievable injury. If it<lb />were continued there is no knowing<lb />what shape it might eventually, have<lb />developed Even no sculptors declare<lb />that a model with a natural waist,<lb />sloping outward rather than inward,<lb />is something not to be found, even the<lb />most charming figures otherwise hav-<lb />~nt how-<lb />ever siieht a form suf c tent to spoil<lb />them for posing for anything .de-<lb />manding the freedom, the beauty and<lb />grace of the antique. Herr Otto Schulze, who has<lb />been steadily striving to perfect such a<lb />system in Germany, has, it is said, at<lb />length succeeded.in constructing an<lb />apparatus operated electrically, which<lb />overcomes the ordinary difficulties of<lb />the artificial hatching of chickens.
