TOBACCO MARKET.<lb /><lb />Some Interesting Facts About Green-<lb />ville Now and Greenvilie Five<lb /><lb />Years Ago.<lb /><lb />1890 had been a good crop year<lb />and nearly every farmer that had<lb />planted any tobacco in that year<lb />increased his crop ia T91, besides<lb />numbers who had never planted<lb />ary begun cultivating it. The ~91<lb />crop was not a good one. The<lb /><lb />the culture of tobacco had spread<lb />\from the little community just<lb />Ieee Greenville almost all over<lb />Eastern Carolina. Farmers had<lb />gone tothe expense of making<lb /><lb />did not discoursege them, while<lb />some reduced their acreage<lb />a great many who had never<lb />planted any before planted a few<lb />acres. It was in this year, 1891,<lb />in June that a meeting of the cit".<lb />izens who were interested in to-<lb />bacco was called. F.<lb />Evans, who had charge of the<lb />house, to visit some of the older<lb />markets and try get buyers:<lb />Nearly everyone that we ap<lb />proached said that he had an idea<lb />of placing a man onthe eastern<lb />markets but they knew nothing<lb />of Greenville. Rocky Mount,<lb />Tarboro and Wilson seemed to<lb />be the only markets that were<lb />known and very much woried but<lb />not discouraged we came back<lb />and depended on luck to getsome<lb />one to buy the tobacco.
