L. JOYNER.<lb />Mr. J. W. Morgan has been<lb />unwell for the past few days.<lb /><lb />D. J. Walker, of Durham, a<lb />very highly respected gentleman<lb />anda good judge of tobacco,<lb />has come to Greennille to iocate.<lb /><lb />Col. J. Bryan Grimes sold ninve-<lb />teen grades of tobacco on the<lb />Eastern, Tuesday, for which he<lb />got a check for $765.<lb /><lb />Reports say that the long<lb />protracted spell of dry weather<lb />has kept farmers in the old to-<lb />bacco belt from selling but very<lb />little tobacco as yvet- Now that<lb />we have had a general season, an<lb />idea of what the up countiy crop<lb />is can soon be iearned. If it isa<lb />bright one we may look for lower<lb />prices, if a poor one it is likely<lb />prices on good tobacco w.!l ad-<lb />vance.<lb /><lb />When first we commenced to<lb />write the Tobacco Department,<lb />Greenville was a local market<lb />and our sales were composed of<lb />tobacco that grew almost ex-<lb />clusively in Pitt county in the<lb />section tributary to Greenviile,<lb />and in our articles we referred to<lb />Pitt county tobacco. Gradually<lb />as the market grew larger we be-<lb />gan tc draw from a larger ter-<lb />ritory until now the sales are<lb />made up of tobacco from as many<lb />different counties surely as any<lb />market in eastern North Carolina,<lb />and likely as any market in the<lb />State- The counties in the cen-<lb />ter of which Greenvi'le is situated<lb />are-in reality the tobacco growing<lb />eastern counties,viz: Pitt,Greene<lb />Lenoir, Craven, Beaufort, Martin,<lb />Edgecombeand Wilson. Ofcourse<lb />there are other counties that are<lb />generally considered eastern<lb />counties, but strictly speaking do<lb /><lb />~Inot belong to them. Besides<lb /><lb />those mentioned there are Bertie,<lb />Hertford, Washington, Tyrrell)<lb />jand a number of others that are<lb />just beginning to grow tobacco<lb /><lb />but will probably never plant it<lb /><lb />| extensively on anqoart of the<lb /><lb />~plain to all, and dreadfully ap-<lb /><lb />State.<lb /><lb />STOP LYING<lb /><lb />Awake | at night thinking about how and where you can spend your orden<lb />money to the best advantage. The<lb />eight above named constitute the<lb />leading tobacco growing counties<lb />uf Eastern North Carolina. There<lb />are three leading tobacco mar-<lb />kets in this belt, Greenville, Wil-<lb />son and Rocky Mount. The last<lb />two named draw largely from<lb />Nash, Franklin and Vance coun-<lb />ties and the territory adjacent to<lb />and in South Carolina, while<lb />Greenville is in the eastern cen-<lb />ter of these and is strictly the<lb />bright tobacco market of Eastern<lb />North Carolina. There are five<lb />counties around Greenville that<lb />grow more bright tobacco than<lb />ary other seven counties in the<lb />State of equal size, and by the<lb />common consent of some of the<lb />best judges that we have, it is by<lb />far the most choice, hence it 1s<lb /><lb />H.
