L. JOYNER.<lb /><lb />Every indication points to five<lb />million pounds for Greenville this<lb />year. The market has already<lb />sold nearly two million pounds.<lb /><lb />It seems to be with character.<lb />istic pride that when some of: our<lb />farmers bite at the bait offered by<lb />distant warehousemen, they re-<lb />turn home and proceed immedi-<lb />ately to blow the said market and<lb />the said warehousemen.<lb /><lb />If every farmer were hke the!<lb />one who tries first one market |<lb />and then another and offers the<lb />fact that he lives near some other<lb />market, to get the men with<lb />whom he is selling his tobacco to<lb />give him just a little bit better<lb />price than he does other people,<lb />what kind of a world would we<lb />have. Such men are pigmies,<lb />while they think they are really<lb />smart. ~<lb /><lb />We are frequently asked about<lb />how tobaceo.is holding up, &c.<lb />At this particular time tobacco is<lb />sélling remarkably well. When<lb />everything is taken into. consid -<lb />eration, the prices that have been<lb />obtained for tobacce this season<lb />ate most remarkable. From the<lb />15th of August .to the present<lb />time nearly.every warehouse in<lb /><lb />aville has had just about all<lb />~business it coald do. -There<lb /><lb />seve been up to date 1,700,000<lb /><lb />pounds of tobacco sold in. Sounder the circum-<lb />stances, we. think., prices have<lb />been. almost phenominal this sea-<lb /><lb />for good tobacco to go higher.<lb /><lb />When the bill to regulate ware<lb />house charges was before the las.<lb />legislature, among other argu-<lb />ments it was said that the farm-<lb />ers in eastern North Carolina<lb />were so anxious for the law that<lb />they would hold their tobacco<lb />until the law went into effect<lb />the first day of October before<lb />they began selling their tobacco.<lb />The bill passed ~both houses by<lb />an ovewhelming majority, aud<lb />'goes into effest October lst next,<lb />but le. as see if the farmers held<lb />their tobacco to ect the benefit of<lb />the new law. Up tothe 20th of<lb />September of this year nearly<lb />three times as much tobacco<lb />sold in the three leading eastern<lb />Carohna markets as ever be"<lb />fore for the sametime. It really<lb />looks as it were the other way ex-<lb />actly. The bill is a law and<lb />whether it will benefit or demage<lb />the farmer we shall not argue, we<lb />shall conform to it, however, but<lb />our experience in selling tobacco<lb />is, when farmers have good tobac-<lb />co, they donTt mind paying to<lb />~have it sold, but when they have<lb />poor tobacco, selling it absolute-<lb />ly without charge does not give<lb />satisfaction.<lb /><lb />All the latest .
