Democrats also, are inter-<lb />ested in a way, as it is among the<lb />probabilities that QuayTs latese<lb />demonstration of his ability as a<lb />schemer and trickster will cause<lb />him to be selected to run the re-<lb />publican national campaign next<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Ex-Gov. Qulick, ot Arizona,<lb />who has been spending the sum<lb />mer on the Atlantic Coast, is now<lb />in Washington. Speaking of Na~<lb />tional politics he said: In my<lb />judgment the strongest man the<lb />Democratic party can have at the<lb />head of the ticket is Ex-Secretary<lb />William C. Whitney. With such<lb />» leader we can carry New York,<lb />New Jersey and Connecticut be-<lb />yond adoubt. The first two will<lb />be won by democracy this year<lb />according to present indications,<lb />These three States are still essen-<lb />tial to the success of the Demo-<lb />cratic party. It is foliv, this talk<lb />about letting the East go and<lb />formibg an alliance withthe West.<lb />It is a snare and a delusion. The<lb />South cannot affurd to alienate<lb />its old time allies for the sake of<lb />doubtfal coalition with Western<lb />commonwealths of populistic ten-<lb />dencies. There is nothing to gain<lb />by such a combination. The right<lb />programme is to stick to New<lb />York, New Jersey and Connecti<lb />cut. Here is the battle ground in<lb />96, as it has been in the past, and<lb />here the Democracy can conquer.<lb /><lb />Hop. Chauncey F. Black, of Pa.<lb />President of the Nation:! Associ-"<lb />tron of Democratic Clubs, has<lb />written a letter to Lawrence Gard<lb /><lb />*|ner, of this city, Secretary of the<lb /><lb />Association denying that any at-<lb />tempt was being made, as charged<lb />in recent publications, to commit<lb /><lb />the clubs on the silver question.<lb /><lb />In that letter he says: ~~We are<lb /><lb />Riall Democrats. Let us stand faith<lb />)\fully by the national platform<lb /><lb />until a new one is made. I have<lb />my opinion on the silver question<lb />but I have placed on the Execu-<lb />tive Committee of this Association<lb />some ofthe most distinguished<lb /><lb />advocates of silver in the land,<lb /><lb />is witness, McMillin, of Tenn.,'<lb />Carr, of N. Nota thought was taken<lb />cf the silver question when the<lb />committee was appointed. We<lb />ask the co-operativa of all Demo<lb />crats aud all Democratic clubs<lb />between the two oceans in sup-<lb />port of those universally accepted<lb />Democratic principles which are<lb />stated in the several articles of<lb />our constitution, and as to all else<lb />we abide the final determination<lb />of the regular nominating Nation<lb />al Conyention.<lb /><lb />It is stated that several farmers<lb /><lb />from Nebraska will make their<lb />homes in North Carolina, and<lb />that many others are likely to<lb />follow their example.<lb /><lb />J.
