It was<lb />brought in by the schooner Mary<lb />Cabral and has since been reposing<lb />in w tub of water in Mr. Neal's loft.<lb />It is about five and one-half feet<lb />iong, with a round, snakelike body,<lb />surmounted for its whole length by<lb />@ fin eight inches in height. It has<lb />an enormous tail, which. itis thought<lb />would pive it almost any speed. But<lb />its chief beauty is its mouth. It<lb />would kill a pie-eater with envy.<lb />The jaws are about seven inches<lb />long and the extent to which the<lb />mouth can be opened is limited ~only<lb />by the amount of room there isin<lb />which toopen it. There are three<lb />rows of teeth, the first being about<lb />an inch long, and different from any<lb />teeth which any of the -fishermen<lb />have ever seen. They are not saw-<lb />2dged, like a man-eating shark's, or<lb /><lb />pointed, like a sand sharkTs, but are<lb />flat aud blade-like, very sharp at the<lb />point, almost translucent and slight-<lb />ly flexible.<lb /><lb />The creature was taken on a<lb />trawl on Le Have Bank, and made a<lb />desperate fight. before it could be got<lb />into the dory. To guard oneTs<lb />own flag against canture is the<lb />pride, to capture the flag of oneTs<lb />enemy the ambition, of every valiant<lb />soldier. In consequence, in every<lb />war between peoples of good military<lb />record, feats of daring performed by<lb />color bearers are honorably common.<lb />The civil war was full of such inci-<lb />dents. Out of very many, two or<lb />three stand as especially note-<lb />worthy.<lb /><lb />One occurred at Fredericksburg on<lb />the day when half the brigades of<lb />Meagher and Caldwell lay on the<lb />bloody slope leading up to the con-<lb />federate intrenchments. Among<lb />the assaulting regiments was the<lb />Fifth New Hampshire, and it lost<lb />186 cut of 300 men who made the<lb />chacge. The survivors fell back<lb />sullenly behind the fence, within<lb />easy range of the confederate rifle<lb />pits. Just before reaching it the<lb />last of the color guard was shot and<lb />the flag fell in the open.<lb /><lb />A Capt. Purdy instantly ran out<lb />tocaptureit, and as he reached it<lb />was shot through the heart; another<lb />captain, Murray, made the same<lb />attempt and was also killed, and so<lb />was a third, Moore. Several private<lb />soldiers met a like fate. Thev were<lb />all killed close to the flag, and their<lb />dead ~bodies fell across one another.<lb />Taking advantage of this breast-<lb />works, Lieut.
