The tree was<lb /><lb />HEATIESS-OUIGNESS<lb /><lb />Water Hyacinths Impeding Navigation.<lb /><lb />An assisted immigrant is making<lb />a lot of trouble in Louisiana. It is<lb />a plant, a water-hyacinth, which a<lb />man from New Orleans saw and ad-<lb />mired about three years ago while<lb />on a visit to Colombia. He brought<lb />some bulbs of it home with him and<lb />and grew them in tubs in his front<lb />yard. In about two years patches<lb />of the flower appeared in the Bayou<lb />St. John, which conuects New Or-<lb />leans with Lake Pontchartrain. In<lb />another year the bayou was full of<lb />it, sothat navigation was impeded.<lb />Now all the canals near New Orleans<lb />are overrun and covered up with<lb />this invading flower; great masses<lb />of it are floating in the lake; rivers<lb />cunning into the lake are choked<lb />with it, and it has traveled a hun-<lb />dred*miles to the westward of New<lb />Orleans. It grows enormously,<lb />spreads iike rabbits in Australia,<lb />chokes all the bayous and streams it<lb />gets into, and is a tremendous nui-<lb />sance, the limitations of which are<lb />vot in sight. In Colombia it is a<lb />barmless, flowering plant that grows<lb />in tubs, but in Louisiana the condi-<lb />tions suit it, and have developed it<lb />into the most flourishing and obsti-<lb />nate pest the state has known since<lb />she lost the Louisiana lottery."<lb />HarperTs Weekly.<lb /><lb />MOVING A BIG TREE.<lb /><lb />A Giant ~Cherry [faken Up<lb />Moved to Another Place.<lb /><lb />Just before midnight one night in<lb />the middle of February last, a cher-<lb />ry tree, with earth attached, weigh-<lb />ing twelve and tiree-quarter tons,<lb />began the passage from the Knowles<lb />estate at Pawtucket and Fletcher<lb />streets to the grounds of ex-Mayor<lb />FieldTs residencein Middlesex street.<lb />The tree was on a sled and the<lb />way it got off there is an interesting<lb />story. During the cold snap a<lb />trench was dug around the tree. It<lb /><lb />and<lb /><lb />propped up so that it could not fall,<lb /><lb />and then the earth was dug from)<lb /><lb />under the roots until the. tree stood<lb />free, except that a platform of earth<lb />two feet deep and twelve feet in<lb />diameter clung to it. The roots<lb />and the frost held the ground in-<lb />tact.<lb /><lb />Then the tree was tipped over<lb />gently with jacks to measure its<lb />length on the ground, so that the<lb />twelve-foot circle of horizoatal earth<lb />was made perpendicular. More jack-<lb />screws were used to raise the circle<lb />of frozen earth, so that the sled was<lb />slipped under it, and then it was<lb />lowered, and the horses pulled the<lb />combination out of the orchard.<lb />Wooden shears braced the reeling<lb />tree ou the sled. All this was done<lb />a couple of weeks ago. The earth<lb />cracked during the work, and the<lb />cracks were plastered with mud and<lb /><lb />Sl allowed to freeze tight.
