She is an elder-<lb />ly woman, with sons old enough to<lb />attend the high school, and is of a<lb />mild and benign disposition. She<lb />does not see well without her giasses,<lb />and to this she attributes her mis-<lb />fortune. .<lb /><lb />About eight oTclock in the even-<lb />ing of one of the very cold days she<lb />had a seat in a Summit street car.<lb />It was crowded with shoppers and<lb />men going home from work. Stand-<lb />ing in front of her, with his back<lb />turned to her, the other passengers<lb />saw avery short man. He was hav-<lb />ing a very hard time keeping on his<lb />feet as the car lurched from time to<lb />time with the slack of the o~cable.<lb />He was too short to hold to the<lb />straps, and the best he could do was<lb />to hang to the man iu front of him.<lb />A look of sympathy passed over the<lb />benign-looking womanTs face as she<lb />witnessed his struggles. When<lb />the car rounded the curve at the cor-<lb />ner of Ninth and Washington streets<lb />it gave a frightful lurch.<lb /><lb />The little man was taken off his<lb />guard, and landed squarely in the<lb />womanTs lap. He tried to rise as<lb />fast as he could, and excuse himself,<lb />when to his surprise and horror, he<lb />felt that she wus holding him where<lb />he was. He tried again to get up,<lb />but she held him tighter than be-<lb />fore.<lb /><lb />' oThatTs all right, little boy, sit<lb />still,T. she said kindly, with a smile.<lb /><lb />Passengers were staring in amaze-<lb />ment at the unusual spectacle, and<lb />the ribbon-counter girl in the cor-<lb />ner of the car tittered audiably.<lb /><lb />The undersized victim began. to<lb />squirm, but his captor attributed<lb />it to his bovish embarrassment. It<lb />was only when he turned his big<lb />round eyes on her and said, in a<lb />deep bass voice: ~*Will you be kind<lb />enouzh to let me go, madam? that<lb />she discovered that she bad made a<lb />horrible mistake. She had taken<lb />him fora mere boy, and her mother-<lb />ly instinct: had: asserted itself at<lb />seeing him stand upin acrowded car.<lb /><lb />Her confusion was paiuful to wit-<lb /><lb />ness. She stammered a few words<lb />of expianation, which the short man<lb />was too rattled to reply to. The<lb />passengers were cruel enough to<lb />laugh, and they both looked as<lb />though they wished themselves far<lb />away. At the nearest corner she<lb />got. out, her cheeks. still crimson<lb />with mortification. _The short man<lb />took her seat, jammed his hat down<lb />hard over his: forehead and buried<lb />himself in-his newspaper. - -<lb /><lb />Pie<lb /><lb />A Bevy of Birds at a Hotel.<lb /><lb />A queer coincidence was the cause<lb />of considerable merriment in the<lb /><lb />day. Early in:theday 'D. Sparrow,<lb />of New York, registered and was as-<lb />signed to his room. Within an hour<lb />T. J. Quail, of Gloverdale, Mass.,<lb />spread his name upon the register,<lb />and he, too, went to his room. In<lb />the afternoon C. A. Partridge, of<lb />this city, registered for dinner, and<lb />he remarked that if any notes came<lb />for him the clerk should hold them.<lb />The next afternoon L. R. Forrest,<lb />of Albany. N. Y., registered at the<lb />hotel, and all mail that came to the<lb />three men was putin his box. ~~It<lb />was the most appropriate place for<lb />it, said Mr. Parker, adding: ~~This<lb />reminds me of an annual game din-<lb />ner."Chicago Inter Ocean.<lb /><lb />The New Woman Again.<lb /><lb />Finks"Is your wife still doing her<lb />own cooking?<lb /><lb />Ginks"Oh, no; we found a new<lb />woman yesterday.<lb /><lb />Finks"To cook? .<lb /><lb />Ginks"Certainly.
