Your letter of a<lb />few days agoin which you ask my<lb />yiews in regard to several phazes<lb />of the politcal situation received.<lb />Tne eounty goyernment law<lb /><lb />evactei by the recent Legislature<lb />bears no similarity to that ex-<lb />peeted at the hands of the fusion-<lb />ists. The same fear and distrast<lb />of the negroes is evinced that hes<lb />always been shown by the Demo-<lb />crats. Bat the fusionists carry<lb />this feature of the taw further<lb />even than the Democrats before<lb />them. The election of three com<lb />missioners is sil rigbt, but be-<lb />comes a trayesty upon local self-"<lb />government when it is made so<lb />easy for the opposite politica!<lb />y to cause the appointment<lb />eftwo additional commissioners<lb />whose pcwer when appointed will<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />elected by the People. This sin<lb />gie peculiarity of the new law has<lb />stripped it of every vestige of<lb />kinship to that vouchsafed by<lb />the Republican State platform, m<lb />liea of which it is a mean and<lb />cowardly excuse. The ps<lb />of this law marks the end of fu:<lb />sion or Co-operation between the<lb />Repablican and Third parties in<lb />North Carolina.
