Experiments have<lb />shown that the combustibility of<lb />tobacco is chiefly dependent upon<lb />the cowposition of the ash ; that<lb />i¥, upon the proportion and com-<lb />bination of the mineral coastita<lb />ents of the plant.<lb /><lb />In appiyimg rertilizers or m -<lb />nure of course itis always desir<lb />able to produce an iucrease in the<lb />yield aod in geuweral that is the<lb />plimary otject of fertilization.<lb />and it is only in the increase of<lb />yield that we commonly book the<lb />orofit from the application of<lb />wanuare. With tobaceo we find<lb />carselves confronted with a very<lb />~different condition of affairs, it<lb />often being easy to prodace au<lb />increase in tie tiefd, but the pro<lb />duct will be of au inferior quality<lb />and, in consequence, its total<lb />yalue much less than it would<lb />have been withour the fertiliza-<lb />tion- Again, fertilizers will often<lb />show irtic 1f awy Increase in yield,<lb />but cause a eréat improvement<lb />in quality, and thas giva retarns<lb />by bringiag mure per pound than<lb />it would have otherwise. The experiments show<lb /><lb />{the petash saits to. be -tbhe most<lb />~potent factors in changing the<lb />composition and quantity of the<lb />tobacco produced. It was shown<lb />very plainly that muriate of pot-<lb />asb, kaivit and low grade sul<lb /><lb />phate 6f pdtash were ubfii far use<lb />as & tobacco fertihzer and should<lb />never be applied to lands that<lb />were ever to be cultivated in to<lb /><lb />bacco; because the chiorine<lb />which these potash salts ~centain<lb />is taken up yecy freely by the<lb />tobaecce piant and chlorine always<lb />produces a tobacco with bad<lb />burning qualities. Ou the other<lb />hand, high grade sulphate of pot<lb />ash always improved the burning<lb />qualities. Carbobite of potash<lb />(ashes) prodaces tobacco witb<lb />ithe best combnstibility. The ap<lb />plication of potash was in most<lb /><lb />in yield, but in mauy cases the<lb />increase was smail.<lb /><lb />Phosphorié acid proved to have<lb />but litthe direct bearing upon the<lb />combustibility, but 1t generally.<lb />produces a very decided increas-<lb />in the yield. Lime and magnesia<lb />compounds in small quantities<lb />seemed to producé little effect<lb />pro orcon, but in large quanti-<lb />ties it produced a tobacco that<lb />cared badiy and had an inferior<lb />texture ; the dtration of glow was<lb />considerably larger with lime and<lb />magnesia tubacco, but iu many<lb />cases the ash wes of a bad color<lb />On the whele, while lime and mag-<lb />sesia will often very materialiy<lb />increase the yield, yet their<lb />quality is such ¢hat their applica:<lb />tion Canudt be recommendded,<lb /><lb />The salient priaciples io the<lb />use of fertilizers for the tobacco<lb />crop may be summarized as fol-<lb />lows:<lb /><lb />ist. Donot furnish the pot~<lb />tash of a tebacco fertilizer by<lb />means of muriate of putash as it<lb />prodaces a bad quality.<lb /><lb />8th. Do not apply kainit to<lb />tobacco or tobacco lands, as it<lb />produces a bad quality of tobac-<lb />co.<lb /><lb />9th. Do not use low grade<lb />sulphate of potash in tobacco<lb />fertilizers as it causes inferior<lb />quality in the tobacvo.<lb /><lb />10th. Bigh grade sulphate of<lb />potash always improves the qual-<lb />ity of tobaceo and generally in-<lb />creases the yield.<lb /><lb />llth. The tobacco having the<lb />best combustibility was grown<lb />with carbonate of potash but the<lb />cost of carbonate often excludes<lb />its use.<lb /><lb />12th. Never apply lime to<lb />laud immediately before planting<lb />itin tobacco. In fact its bad<lb />effects in curing will sometimes<lb />last for seyeral years.<lb /><lb />13th. Phosphotic acid géner-<lb />ally increases the yield, but does<lb />not affect the quality.<lb /><lb />14th. Nitrogen produces in mest<lb />elses an increased yield, but to<lb />marked effects on quality could be<lb />détectéd.<lb /><lb />15th.
