<lb />ail<lb /><lb />__ Entered as second-class mail matter.<lb />~EVERY AFTERNOON (EXCEPT SUNDAY)<lb />c<lb /><lb />A SHORT CROP.<lb />Advice was pretty freely given<lb /><lb />Hie tobacco growers last year to<lb />their ucreaye and do their<lb />utmost in the direction of pro<lb />ducing better leaf- They met<lb />with poor success as & general<lb />thing in improying the quality<lb />mot because they did not try hard<lb />_ enough but for the reason tuat<lb />_ the weather was against them.<lb />Tue 1894 crop, while an improve-<lb />| ment over that of the year pre-<lb />_ vious, was far from a first class<lb />| one, being deficient more espe-<lb />| cially in wrappers. Wrappers}<lb />_ are becoming very scarce iu the<lb />- market, and if the farmers do not<lb />_ have better luck this summer, the<lb />plug manufacturers will be ip<lb />' trouble next season.<lb /><lb />In regards to the size of last<lb />year's crop, it was undoubtedly<lb />| ghort as a whole. All of the<lb /><lb />pontios markets report a falling<lb /><lb />- off in sales as compared with the<lb />_ year before,and although gains<lb />| have been made by some of the<lb />~minor markets, their increase of<lb />~pusiness will by ne means offset<lb />the decrease st the larger mar-<lb />kets. Danville will probably be<lb />Sbehind about six or seyen million<lb />_ avd Lynchburg, Winston<lb />and other cities will show a pro<lb />. ate lose. The shortage<lb />"which they show at present wil!<lb />_ be greater as the season advan-<lb />' ees, for the biggest proportion by<lb />far of the crop has passed oat of<lb />the plantersT hands, and breaks<lb />_ daring the summer promise to be<lb />3 light and to cease almost alto-<lb />3 some time before fall. The<lb /><lb />- Eastern North Carolina markets<lb />mare already resting, and there are<lb />Y indications that the end is close<lb />© by for the central district of the<lb />| Btate. South Carolina got through<lb /><lb />month or so ago. Quietness<lb /><lb />. will reige on the Piedmont North<lb />_ Carc and the Virginia mar<lb />tate betore many weeks elapse.<lb /><lb />_ ~The 1894 crp affords a plenty<lb /><lb />of a working stock, and the<lb />sly of all grades, common and<lb />dium io particular and wrap"<lb />Der Sexcepted, is ample to last<lb /><lb />years. Again the farmer'|,<lb />dinect his energies more<lb /><lb />towards quality than qaantity.<lb />Good tobacco will bring him good<lb />~returns for the labor and invest-<lb />ments-<lb />" EEE ss<lb />oTOO MUCH GIRLIE.<lb /><lb />As maid-of-all-work, the China-<lb />man has won a fair reputation;<lb />but he is undoubtedly wrong cp<lb /><lb />the womah question. A corre~<lb />spondent of Frank Lealies<lb />Monthly telis of her Chinese<lb /><lb />servant's pecalar conduct when<lb />twin girls were born to the house-<lb />hold.<lb /><lb />Sue Kung had iets with us for<lb />three years, when twin daughters<lb />blessed our homes. He came in<lb />to look at them, and.laid a new<lb />coin om their pillows and some<lb />tiny cups under the crib, and<lb />then asked, oHim girls or she<lb />boys? We said, two girls<lb />His face was a study, and wild-"<lb />ly waving his hands, with the<lb />gestare of wringing the neck of a<lb />fowl, he said :<lb /><lb />oToo much girlie; ling hims<lb />neck in China. Too much girlie<lb />cost too muchee ; allee time want<lb />nice clothes. Too much boys<lb />good, cause they makee muchee<lb />money in the banks<lb /><lb />When he came in the next<lb />morning, he said, oMe likee you<lb />delly (very) mach, but me likee to<lb />stay in any place where him. get-<lb />tee two girlies alles same time.<lb /><lb />He made us numerous and ele-<lb />gant presents, such as beautifully<lb />embroidered mantel draperies and<lb />highly colored silk handkerchiefs,<lb />and some pretty china trinkets<lb />and ornaments for othem too<lb />much girlies, and left our em-<lb />ploy.<lb /><lb />SeennaneeREnneneRneEaEa<lb /><lb />Probably the most remarkable<lb />sense of humor ever known was<lb />that of a soldier, who laughed up-<lb />roarously all the time he was be-<lb />ing fogged, and when the officer,<lb />at the end inquired the cause of<lb />bis m rth, broke oat in a fresh fit<lb />of laughter and cried: oWhy I'm<lb />~the wrogg man !<lb />eee<lb /><lb />The Massachusetts Legislatare<lb />bas passed a Sunday iaw that<lb /><lb />statue on that subject. It pro-<lb />vides for punishing any one who<lb /><lb />goes alittle ahead of the usual |!#<lb /><lb />It Was Good Advice.<lb /><lb />A wniterin the Grect Divide<lb />says that some years ago, while<lb />he was office-boy ina large retail<lb />store, a bit of advice was given<lb />him that he has always remem-<lb />bered. It was sound advice, at<lb />all events, though the giver of it<lb />preached better than he practic-<lb />ed.<lb /><lb />The establishment was large,<lb />and enough wk was used to ne-<lb />cessitate the purchasing of a doz-<lb />en pint bottles every few months.<lb />These bottles had accumulated<lb />for some time, and as there was<lb />scarcely room in the closet for<lb />the lot which had just arrived, I<lb />was instructed to take the old<lb />ones to the waste room. I remov.-<lb />ed them from the closet, bat put<lb />them in one of the stock-rooms in<lb />the basement until after lunch<lb />time came; then I took them to a<lb />jank-shop near by, and sold them<lb />for two cents apiece, which net<lb />ted me seventy-two cents. I re-<lb />torned to the office in high spirits<lb />but a little doubtful whether the<lb />money really belonged to me. All<lb />the afternoon I pondered over the<lb />question, and finally I referred it<lb />to the cashier, who had always<lb />been a good friend of mine.<lb /><lb />oWell, he said, ono doubt you<lb />could have had the bottles bad<lb />you asked forthem; but my ad-<lb />vice would be to turn the money<lb />over to the firm, as little things of<lb />this sort are liable to lead to acts<lb />of downright dishonesty-<lb /><lb />I turned the money in, there-<lb />fore, but rather reluctantly, I<lb />must admit. Butthe strange part<lb />of the etury is yet to come. Not<lb />long ago I read of the trial and<lb />conviction of this same cashier<lb />for embezzlement. His depreda-<lb />tions had extended over a number<lb />of years, and horrible doubts now<lb />eater my head whether the firm<lb />ever received that seventy-two<lb /><lb />eents.<lb />eee<lb /><lb />The new revenue and ma<lb />chinery act requires the asses-<lb />sors and list-takers of the various<lb /><lb />~|townships to meet on or before<lb /><lb />the second Monday in May and/*<lb />elect a chairman.
