Satur-<lb />day the boys went.to Ayden, and<lb />on the way back home began<lb />quarelling as they rode together.<lb />There were no eye witnesses to<lb />what occurred along the way, but<lb />&amp; man passing the same road<lb />later in the evening fouvnd Ben<lb /><lb />Hardee up to his neck in water in<lb />the swamp. The man pulled Beno<lb />out of the water and found that he<lb />had a very dangerous cui in the<lb />abdomen. Ben told that his<lb />brother Peter stabbed him and<lb />when he fell out of the cart drove<lb />off and left him. The man car<lb />ried Ben on home. Peter had<lb />been there and left his horse but<lb />immed ately disappeared. Noth-<lb />ing was seen of him Saturday<lb />night, but he put in an apdpear-<lb />anve at the house Sunday and<lb />said he wanted a private talk<lb />with Ben. They had the talk and<lb />after that Ben told a different tale<lb />about how the cutting occurred,<lb />saying thathe fell on his knife.<lb />PeterTs head was badly beaten up<lb />and he says that Ben done it with<lb />@® cart round. Ben died thia<lb />morning and Peter is repoited in<lb />@ critical condition from the<lb />wounds on his head.-<lb />These are particulars gathered<lb />from people in town to-day from<lb />the neighborhood in which the<lb /><lb />the house yesterday. It<lb />was also said that the chairman<lb />of the committee had said be-<lb />foreany bids were filed that he<lb />would award the contract to<lb />Stewart Brothers. The majority<lb />report was adopted.<lb /><lb />The election law bill passed by<lb />a strict party vote of 28 to 5.<lb /><lb />The bili passed providing for<lb />the election of justices of the<lb />peace by this Legislature and for<lb />theirelestion in future bv the<lb />people. The<lb />bill provided for increasing the<lb />number in eacr township by ap<lb />pointing six additional ones and<lb />not to furnish them any laws by<lb />which they might be able tu know<lb />how to decide cases. Those who<lb />voted for the bill actually got up<lb />immediately and said havnTt we<lb />played the fool? And everybody<lb />said yes. They reconsidered the<lb />bill, reduced the number to three<lb />and gave them books.<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />Sorte<lb /><lb />Weare sure. that the report<lb />that the Populists in the Legisla-<lb />ture have called a halt is not in<lb />eorrect because their actions for<lb /><lb />Sthe past few days has shown<lb /><lb />this They helped the Democrats<lb />kill the bill to change the charter<lb />of the city of Raleigh which<lb />would have turned the Capitol<lb />over to the control of the negroes.<lb />They also voted some amend-<lb />ments to the County Government<lb />bill which makes it less objection<lb />able than it was in its original<lb />shape. Itis said that they will<lb />also demand. some amendment of<lb /><lb />the election law. They should<lb />look well to this.<lb /><lb />The Republi-<lb />cans want this bilf passed so<lb />that they can control the election<lb />in this State. J. Eastman, a prominent . con-<lb />tractor of this city, was seriously<lb />stabbed here to-day ina difficulty<lb />with John A. Hatton. The affair<lb />occurred on  Twenty-seyenth<lb />street, opposite Hotel Ivy, and<lb />was the result of a quarrel that<lb />arose between the two men over<lb />a baby carriage belonging to Hat-<lb />tcn, which was kept in the: hall-<lb />way of EastmanTs house and ob-<lb />structed the passage. Eastman<lb />told his agent to request Hatton<lb />to vacate, as the other occupants<lb />of his building complained very<lb />much of the obstruction. Hatton<lb />came into the real estate agent's<lb />office while Eastman was there.<lb />and renewed the quarrel, saying<lb />that he would skip him alive if<lb />he touched his carriage again.<lb /><lb />Eastman inyited him out, and<lb />Hatton followed him, going to a<lb />butcher-shop near by and bor-<lb />rowing a knife, Hatton returned<lb />to the stieet, calling Eastman a<lb />Yaukee" ", and began to slash<lb />him with the knife. Before. the<lb />two meu could be separated Hat-<lb />ton had stabbed his victim ten<lb />times, three on the head and face,<lb />two on the left shoulder, and five<lb />in the left side. Hatton imme-<lb />diately gave himself up, and is<lb />now in jail, having been sent on<lb />to the grand jury this evening at<lb />the preliminary examination.<lb />The physicians that attended the<lb />wounded man stete that he will<lb />likely pull through all right, al-<lb />thougi: one of the cuts in the left<lb />side may prove fatal. Hatton is<lb />@ married man about 30 years ol:l,<lb />and is employed in the furniture<lb />store of Barclay &amp; Williams He<lb />came here from North Carolina<lb />about two years ago."
